alright, my parents have a 99 civic coupe hx, motor is a D16y5 i belive...alright on to the problem. they tell me that every once in a while the check engine light will pop up and idle funny, (jump up and down from 1200 to 2000 rpm) without pushing/touching anything. but the car doesnt really do it when it is off, we frequently reset it by disconnecting the battery and hooking it back up, it will run fine for roughly 75-100 miles then the issue will occur once again, the only thing it really has as mods is an intake (bcuz we bought the car without one at all) if i remember right it was a intake temp code...but dont alot of people use their intakes even in the winter? and a little off topic but why isnt there a forum for 96- 00 civic's????

Probably an idle air control valve......... If you don't want to spend the money on the parts guessing around. Simply wait for the light to pop on run over ti Honda or any trusted local shop and ask them to scan it for you. The ask how it should be fixed

I use my intake year round.

Wait till the code appears and find out what the code is by using the test jumper.

I use my intake year around, If its a CAI just watch out for rain puddles an everything should be ok.

i did a scan and its the idle control, should i replace it?

try cleaning it with brake cleaner. 2 12mm bolts. careful not to overtighten them - they like to strip and take part of the IM with them.

i'd check grounding connections while i'm down there.

i'm not too sure about this one, but do you have a mass airflow sensor?

Wish there was a way to completely get rid of the darn idle control valve. I cleaned mine a few months back and it started acting up within a few weeks. I replaced it and now is acting up again. Looks like it will need replacing again. I guess these darn things dont last more than 4-6 months.

i use my intake on both my hondas year round right now it 5 degrees here dont matter maybe iac valve,or throttle pos. sencer or you'll have to check the code when the light comes on it will help narrow it down just do the jump wire and check the num. of times the light flashes.

I checked the code with my code reader and it is the IACV. 2nd one in about 4 months. There has to be a way to get rid of it.
