well the only way we can conclude this is we fill it up let it set on a cold engine and check the level.

x3253. i used m1 synthetic when i had the turbo in my 99 gsr, switched back to regular ol' castrol after (that's what i ran before the turbo), engine still runs a-ok. you can switch back and forth whenever you feel like it.

Wow. Some people still believe the old myths about synthetic oil? I was hoping these would have died off in the last decade but ... *sigh* ... I see they haven't.

I switch oil types (conventional to synthetic and back again) with the seasons. synthetic oil's main benefit to me is its ability to flow better in sub-freezing temps ... especially sub-zero temps. Yes, it also resists thinning, oxidation and boil off at higher temps ... but our cars don't usually see these temps unless we lose our radiators ... and then we have bigger problems and no oil is likely to save our engines at that point.

The additive package in synthetic oils can be a bit better than conventional oil ... but this is not always so. Mobil 1's is kinda cheap these days (according to the esteemed Terry Dyson) and Hondas are probably better off with Pennzoil Platinum (I loaded up on this stuff when Advanced Auto parts had a sale a year ago) as it handles fuel dilution better ... which you'll get in Hondas that see a lot of stop-and-go and/or idling.

However, no oil is bad. Anything SJ or newer that's 5W-20 will work fine for up to about 5,000 miles. To push your oil change interval out past that point, you should have oil analysis done. To see what these lab tests are like, you can go to BITOG and search out the Honda analysis done by the forum members:

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/...age=1

I would never go past 5,000 miles on 1 batch of oil and a filter ... regardless what the OLM says.

Castrol, Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Havoline, Chevron Supreme, etc ... it's all good. I especially like Schaeffer (a synthetic blend):

http://www.schaefferoil.com/supreme_7000.html

and Terry highly recommends RLI:

Royal Purple ... long on bling-bling, short on performance, Not a bad oil actually ... just not worth the asking price.

I'm using Pennzoil Platinum right now ... will change again in March or April to Havoline conventional 5W-20. I have plenty of both that I picked up on sale. I'd like my buddies to get together and decide on some Schaeffer products so we can get a large drop-shipment straight from St. Louis like we did a few years ago.

WILD WILL makes a good point. 0.1 of a quart is 3 ounces (actually 3.2 ounces). Does anyone think (seriously) that underfilling or overfilling your top level (top of the cross-hatched area) by 3 ounces is going to have any effect whatsoever?

If you buy 5 quarts and dump it in, you will probably only be adding 4.9 quarts, anyway.

Even if technically full is 5.1 quarts, 4.9 is plenty safe enough.

The best way to make sure you arent overfilling or underfilling is to:

1)Make sure you park on a level surface and
2)use the dipstick.

I change my oil on a lift every time since the 1st time when I could not get my filter off in my drive way. what a (PITA). I add oil until the dipstick says it's full then start the car and idle for a minute. I check the dipstick again and its just under the top hole on the stick. I check my oil on the next fill up and it seems to make oil because it is all ways above the top mark. Im not sure what the deal is so when I change my oil now I don't fill it all the way like in the past. I have found if I fill it just between the two marks on the stick after my idle run it is fine the next time I check . it just seems strange that I check the oil a few times during my oil change to make sure its just right and a few days later I have more on the stick then when I changed the oil. anyone else encounter this ?

when you do your oil change, let the car idle for more than a minute. let it warm all of the way up to running temperature, shut it off, and check it.
