Default I tried wetsanding carbon fiber hood, came out dull and scratchy, need polish?

i tried wet sanding a small spot on my cf hood with 1200 grit, but it came out dull and was scratched up.

my goal is to wet sand the oxidation out of the clear coat and re-clear it. am i on the right track, should it be dull and just need to be polished and buffed out instead of re-cleared? i am afraid that if i spray clear coat onto the old, dull coat, it would look like crap. please help me out, thanks a lot.

1200? i would of started w/ 1500 and then my way up to 2000 and then buff it out with a compound, as long as you dont go through the clear coat, than you should be fine.

oh arite, thanks a lot. and if i buff with a compound, will the look last or will it fade back to the dullness of the sanding. and is buffing with compound better solution than re-clearing it? thanks

I always go wet 1500, wet 2000, rubbing compound, polishing compound, then glaze. Bing bang done.

i'm not to familiar with how much clearcoat is on carbon fiber hoods. Hopefully, you are using good sanding paper. I prefer Meguiars Unigrit as well as a sanding block and you presoak the paper. Also make sure you use clean water and as long as you aren't applying to much pressure at 1500 you shouldn't go through the clearcoat. Wetsanding is an art and takes time to perfect. If i were you, I would machine compound to save the clearcoat you got left. If its truly bad, you might want to sell this and buy a new one. I've worked on carbon fiber before and the best way to keep up the apperance is to wax it regulary. Treat it like paint.
