Timing or something wrong
I am not a mechanic but I have alot of friends who are but we are stumped. I have a problem with my 2000 Accord 4CYL. Whenever I stop at a light my RPM's drop to near zero and the car if tilted upwards like on a hill or something will shut off. If I rev the car up and hold it for a while when I let go the car shuts off. In addition when stopped at the light it will idle really low but all of a sudden it jumps back up to what it was supposed to be and all is fine for maybe two minutes when it does it again. This will happen with the A/C compressor on or off. We tried playing eith the timing but when we raised it before completely stopping the tranny would jump or skip. Please help in any way that you can. What might this be? Thanks
Not a timing issue at all, sounds like your IAC motor is either shot or IAC port/tube clogged up. Do you have a CEL?
edit:
go here and explode the view, what you're looking for is #9 on the back of the plenum at the throttle plate. When your car is idling the throttle is completely closed and what the IAC (or rotary air control) valve does is direct air around the throttle and allows for minute adjustments. Start you car up and when it idles rough take something and lightly tap on the valve and see if that helps. If it does help then take the valve off and clean it with brake clean and a small brush but don't damage anything. That should fix it, if it doesn't then you may need a new valve.
