Yeah, thievery is something I'm always scared of with mine.
I just keep OEM wheels on it, the exhaust/struts painted black, and hope people don't steal it. But just in case, I have theft to keep me covered in case they do.
B/T the two motors, I'd go with the HX. It has more power, and the same lean-burn and roller rockers as the VX. The HX tranny is geared more for performance, so I would stick the HX onto a VX/CX 92-95 civic tranny (same gearing b/t the two) to get more performance, and VX mileage, or better. ONly thing is you'll need to run the obd2 ecu to get the added performance from the HX cam.
I'm hoping to find an HX soon to make my car into a hybrid. I did find one at hte junkyard for $60, but my friend took it an hour b/f I got it.

Good idea swapping a CX/VX tranny onto an HX motor. I think I'll be picking up an HX when the time comes around spring time. We'll see what happens.

Nope, not really.
I switched so some slightly taller/skinnier snow tires than the OEM ones, and did see my MPG consistently go up about 1 mpg.
The grill block seems to really be helping the car warm up quickly in these cold winter temps.
My 2nd best mpg was actually just got last week at 47.6 mpg... Much of it was on the highway, but I actually went 5-10mph over the limit the whole time, so I wasnt expecting a good MPG actually.

I did my first all highway trip with my VX and I found if I went over 70 consitently, the MPG went into the high 30s...
Then if I kept my speed at 65, and drafted trucks often, I got an amazing 60.1 mpg!
This was driving on I-81 from MD to S. VA, a road which is constantly going up and down mountains and which had lots of mountain wind and cold temps to deal with.

That's awesome! I'll be keeping that in mind this summer when caravaning down to Import Alliance. I'm hoping to have an HX by then, and possibly a CX tranny.
Do you think swapping in the CX tranny is worth it? I mean, will the car become a slug around town?

The CX/VX tranny isn't the best around town for performance, but if you do a lot of highway driving, it's worth it. It's a whole different driving experience compared to other Honda trannies I've had in that you use 1st and 2nd for your majority of stop and go driving, whereas with most other Honda trannies, 1st and 2nd are pretty much never used.
But I do kind of like using 2nd to get up to speed when I merge. I just keep it in that gear up to about 65 (where it gets to about red-line) and then go into 5th for the rest of the time on the highway.

The gearing is different b/t the different generation trannies. To what degree, I'm not sure. Mista bone is the D-series tranny god, if you search for gear ratios, you'll find the info he posted about the differences in gearing b/t them. As for the cases, there's no way to tell the difference between the different non-vtec d-series trannies visually. You have to spin the input shaft and count the revolutions of the diff.

WTF! I know this is for vtec-e people, but theres a lot of mpg talk going on. My 89 accord is getting horrible gas mileage. It is only rated at 25/30, but still I'm getting below that. My last tank was 24.0, and the one before that 23.4. I don't wanna go crazy and mod this thing, as its just a beater, but how can I bump this up 3-4 mpg? Its auto, so I can't really change my driving habits that much. It has to see 3k rpms to even go anywhere, but it usually don't go over that at all. Seafoam? Maybe some fuel injector cleaner? New fuel filter? Any ideas?

Heres my gas saver:
1993 si
Factory d16z6 w/ 155k
Mods that might effect gas mileage:
-Stainless rs*r cat back
-lowered w/ ground controls
-stock airbox/filter
-NEVER had factory a/c (only si i've seen not to have factory a/c too!)
In the summer I average 39-42mpg
In the winter I average 37-40mpg
The exhaust pretty paid for itself already. Before I put the rsr on I was always right around 35mpg and I saw a good 5mpg jump after I put it on. I was very surprised
What's great about this car is that is gets good gas mileage but still has enough power to autox and have fun with.
Sorry for the dirty pics, I usually don't post pics of my car.

I had some trouble getting much better than 25 mpg w/my 89 Lx-i 5spd.
I noticed my MPG went up a bit when I replaced the plug wires, cap/rotor, and especially the spark plugs. Mine seemed to foul the plugs sometime, but didnt even smoke at all.. I think it ran overly rich for some reason.
I would also look into how to convert it to a 4 wire 02 sensor from the 1-wire it has from the factory. That should make the 02 heat up faster and make the MPG go up.

I noticed my MPG went up a bit when I replaced the plug wires, cap/rotor, and especially the spark plugs. Mine seemed to foul the plugs sometime, but didnt even smoke at all.. I think it ran overly rich for some reason.

The stock airbox does seem to help a lot. It got my MPG up a few versus using the SR intake. </TD></TR></TABLE>
Thanks, I check it every tank.
Yeah, I've tried stock air box, short ram, and cold air and the stock air box works the best
Another good tip for max mpg in your car is to check/clean/replace your o2 sensor often.
