Are you still able to skip stop with that gearing? I run 48-16 on mine, but I wanted to drop to a 15t cog in the rear... I ride on the street exclusively (no velodrome experience yet), and I do not run brakes. I ride clipped in (Crank-brothers Egg Beaters) and have found that to be very helpfull to the overall ride (all of my other bikes are clipless too). Anyhow, just wondering.

yeah I can skid just fine. I used to run 50 - 15 but in my old age I decided to drop it down a bit. I've been riding track bikes for about a decade so im pretty comfortable.

So did I... but mine was on a 20" wheel (BMX Status), not a 700c. It was amazing how quickly sprokets would wear out.

Yep. haven't started the crx in hmm 3 days or so? I just walk a block and I'm on the main strip here.
I run 40x18 guys. It's hella weak and I'm not taking it out for another longish ride till I have something taller. Plus I need some wider handlebars to be more comfy. I threw a different saddle on it the other day.
ok, let me rephrase that. saturday i did a 30 mile stretch and tuesday i did a 25 mile ride...yeah, i'm sore now
may be doing another 20ish on saturday??? might take the mountain bike out instead
edit: anyone got tips on the best way to skid? what i'm doing now is pinch the front brake and then initiating it, but i don't skid long really, someone link me a good vid or something that may teach it...since it's not all the rave here in my town

I lean forward (to unweight the rear tire) pop the back tire up for a second and stop the pedal while the tire is up... set it down and skid. Or, what I usually do... same as before, but only skid for a foot or two, then lift up the tire again and rotate your cranks (left foot forward now becomes right foot forward, and what have you) and set the tire back down. I do this until I come to a stop. I am not an expert at this yet, nor am I articulate enough to explain what I do; but I haven't hit anything (on accident anyway) yet. I have been able to avoid my close calls so far.

its kind of hard to tell you how, it would be alot easier to show you in person. you going to the nashville meet? I can show you there haha

lifting your back tire is not the right way to skid. Your rear wheel shouldnt leave the ground. you just need to shift your wieght forward so that it lightens the rear end. after you get the hang of it you will be able to skid without leaning forward at all or even sitting down. its really simple actually, just takes a second to learn. but once you learn how you will get it in no time

Like I said, I am not good at wording things... I doubt my back-tire leaves the ground, but it does get lighter. I need to go up an down the court in front of my house and practice some more.

So somehow the transition between pedaling and skidding needs to be smooth and fluid? Well, after another 20+ miles tomorrow I'll see what I can come up with

Isn't that referred to as skipping rather than skidding?

It may very well be... I only started fixed gear riding in December, and I am the only person I know with one... I sort of use my own termanology I guess. It slows me down anyhow.
