dseries can handle a fair amount of boost. i was dailying my y8 on 11.5lbs a few years ago. my exhaust manifold cracked, so i took it off. the motor went into my other sedan and continued to run strong even after i sold it. it probably had ~170k.

GMG!!!!
A d16 can handle about 250whp stock, safely I've seen 230's last for years. I had bought a d16z6 years ago boosted on 14lbs on a greddy kit for 2 years, then I sold the motor scrapping a sohc T setup, this was 3+ yrs ago and it still is running til this day.
to top that..........we installed and removed a blockgaurd w/ no machine shop work. Just cold install, and cold removal.

i'd feel better if it was a z6...the y series love to spin bearings. Being my only car, I don't want to push it too much. When I install ARP headstuds I'll refresh the head and install the new turbo seal.

It sort of gave my some hope.
With that said...Potential, I now mean the lack thereof. What's the point?
I'm not exactly sure what to do at the moment as far as motor's go. Mines is running fairly strong I was thinking of taking it out now at it's current state, wrapping it and putting it in the storage for a while. While I throw a JAP b20 or a USD LS in there. Seems these y8's are illusive. I never want to have to play that run around game again 3 bad y8's in 6 months. I guess it's a part of the game when you're impatient like myself.

Agreed. Indefinitely believe it has to do with oil pump flow capacity. It was reduced on y8s. I have no clue as to why, but I prefer a z6 myself. The only "fix" for a y8 is a ported pump. I don't trust myself with that and pre-ported pumps cost $160+. Something I'd definitely do if I was to boost a y8.
Good luck with upgrades!

^ I believe another contributor was the 1 oiling port per journal in y7/y8's versus 2 per journal in the z6/zc/a6
I decided to stick with the D because I'm satisfied even with low boost (5.5psi) on the y8. For the amount of money I've spent, I could maybe do a GSR swap. So I'm satisfied, until it blows. You're right though, I haven't seen a clean y8 swap in the longest time. Keep it and don't sell it, I see the price going up as more and more are blown up.
It sort of gave my some hope.
