Default Worried my Timing is off on Built motor

Hey guys well i finished my build and i was tuning the car and i ran into some funky issues. I woudl liek your guys input before i start to beat on it to much. here is my setup.

95 D16Z6 Block
Eagle Rods
ARP rod bolts 2000
Vitara pistons
ACL bearings

93 JDM D15B Head/Cam
ARP Head Studs
Skunk2 Cam gear
Ported Intake manifold
60mm TB

D16z6 si tranny rebuilt with carbon syncros and QAUIFE LSD
ACT 6 puck clutch/Pressure plate
stock flywheel shaved to 10-12 cant remember

Apexi turbo manifold
Apexi ball bearing turbo
Apexi 2.5 downpipe
Apexi filter
2.5 test pipe 2.5 mandrel bent exhaust with 18in resornator 2.25 axleback twin-loop
JRC 5in intercooler
2.25 mandral from turbo to intercooler
2.5 mandral from intercooler to Throttle body
ALL Black silicone couplers
HKS BOV
DSM 450cc Injectors
Chrome, street tunned with plx-m300 with data logging
Turboxs High performance boost controller
NGK BKRE7E 2 step colder plugs gaped at 28-30


well the issues we had were with the timing... i woudl try to accel. and it would start to sputter and the fuel was good so it had to be timing so we thought it was advanced maybe but it got worse when we retared it more. So we advanced it got better but i'd still hit spots higher up the rpm band so we would keep advancing little by little till it would run all the way to redline and this is what we ended up with. 31* @ 15psi i know it souns ssuper high but i mean its the lowest we could go with it not missing. The idle is set at the stock 16 or 16.5 i forget. and the a/f is 11.0-11.8 at highest. most boost i have seen is 11.6 the compression with this pistons is 8:5:1 so i'm just looking for yours guys info and ideas. I would start by playing with the plug gap... gap em down!

Something is off, double check dizzy timing... and if thats one... maybe just check your timing belt real quickly.

If you want to just look at a vitara block map (nothing crazy on ignition in boost), check out mine on http://www.xenocron.com (its for TE and a 2.5bar motorola map). Car drives like oem on it, not done with map in high boost, but its a start to look at.

Do a compression check, but I think your compression is a lot less with those pistons (like 7.8:1 or 8:1). I do believe 8.5:1 is only on the y8 motor. In which case, those #s sound fine to me. Does it run smoothly? Your running a really small turbo, so I'm betting your only making 215-220whp@15psi.

well its not a small turbo i made 225 and 189 few months ago on 10psi with stock bottom end with 194,xxx miles on it. all i changed was the rods, and pistons. i tried runnign your map splittime but i couldn't even accel. i have double and triple checked the timing belt and cam /dizzy. its all the same as before i did build

We double checked the ignition timing at the dizzy and double checked the timing belt also, but were set right.

We'll try to and get ahold of a compression tester later this week and see what numbers we get. I know on evans-tuning.com they said you could get a rough idea for your compression ratio from what numbers you got on the compression test. My brother said most people are getting around 165psi for each cylinder. Does that sound right for 8.5:1?

No, don't run my map, its for a 2.5bar map sensor and OBD0... i just said to compare it to your map numbers as a basis of a known working car/map combo.

I get 155psi straight across the board on my d16z6 with vitaras. ~8.5:1 on z6.

Well, it will have different headers than the stock Crome ones, since its all different software and base maps. Just hoped it would maybe give you a general idea of what works so far for me.

I just checked your timing map against the one I made where the headers were similar and then average the timing where headers didn't match. When we do a little more research and get this figured out I'll post up our map for comparison.

are you absolutely positive that the cam timing is right?

it REALLY sound like cam timing. good luck buddy.......hope you figure it out.

what ignition stuff have you checked? i doubt it is that stuff, since it made so much power on it just a bit ago, but who knows.

also, does it have problems in ANY gear, or just high gears?

we have a d16z6 and a d15b cam and it looks like the d15b cam is ~5 degree's off. it's so hard to see that with the eye though, i'm going to look into this more later in the week.

it was only happening around 4500+rpm and the more you pressed the throttle the worse it got.
example: 3000rpm and climbing at 30% throttle would only buck a little, but 3000rpm and climbing with 60% throttle would start bucking more, 80% throttle was really bad.

i added timing to pretty much the entire map and it completely went away, smooth as can be.

*shrugs* after we figure out the cam timing 100% and get a compression test done we'll decide how crazy the timing is.

hopefully i'll have my new engine in by then. good luck figureing it out.

you think its cam timing throwing off the dizzy timing?
