Default Why NOT my LS??

Well-- I'm still indecisive about which motor to use...

I'm running a 91 LS and I have no goals/plans for the cars.. Saying " I want X horsepower and X psi" is stupid.. I just need some help..

I have a fairly limited budget for my actual motor set up. I'm not going for anthing extreme here -- just a fun street car..

Here are my two options I have planned out..

My current LS motor with pistons-rods-blockguard-turbo cams and maybe a light head port... I will be running ZYDNE ecu.. Its looking like a t3-T04E will be used.. 1 bar is a nice number to play with but no expectations..

My other options is a B16A from HMO.. I would probably run stock cams and only run piston-rod set up internally.. ZYDNE or Hondata as well on this set up with same turbo etc..

I'm looking for safe reliable horsepower. I dont have any need for 400 whp in this car.. Just something to play around with.. I really really really like torque -- but revving to 8500 in VTEC is always a joy as well..

What would YOU guys do?? Both motors will get gakset set ups and all neccesary work for a rebuild.. Do I need oil squirters for either set up? I know my LS has none and I'm fairly sure the older 1st gen B16A1 motors dont have them either..

Thanks for the help -- turbo cam'd LS or stock cam'd B16 ??

why would you want to go to a smaller motor?

if anything, do the ls/vtec conversion, else, just boost the LS.

i say boost the LS til it blows up then get a sleeved gsr

Boost an LS. It's much safer, and you'll get gobb's of torque.

I just have a general question...what kind of times should you expect with a stock LS turbo in an EG hatch? I know it depends on the turbo size but I don't have that info. I'm asking because I'm supposed to race some guy with LS turbo in a hatch. There are a couple other guys around town that are running the same kinda setup but in different cars and they are running 13.6 to about a 13.2. Is it safe to think this car is going to be running the same kind of time?

Keep the ls until it blows then rebuild. I woudln't go with the b16 i've seen low #'s all over the place lately. Also i would rather have torque from the ls than vtec from the b16 Going this route makes the most time/cost effectiveness route. Since you said ur not interested in making a whole lot of power no need to change setup's or do buildup right off.

im going to tell you my plans since it seems we have similar goals. Im not out to run 11's or make 400+ horsepower.

btw this is 97 ls.

1)Im running a custom turbo kit, precision sc34, inline pro manifold, 3" exhaust ect ill be running fmu/missing link for 2 months 6.5 psi until i can save up for hondata then im going to run 11-12psi stock motor/stock cams. The goal is 270-290 whp. Very attainable and has been proven with my local tuner (tony1) If you have never owned or ridden in a turbo honda 275 whp is very nice for street.

2) If you must have vtec then i would maybe suggest ls/vtec, but only if you have a reputable shop to build it. Then maybe do piston/rods/b16 or gsr head(gsr cams) run 10.1 compression and once again with hondata and some tuning here you should be able to break 300 failry easily.

Like Direp's signature says the best engine is the engine of compromises. Dont buy parts you dont need just get a setup that will work great together and meet your goals and you won't regret it.

Sorry for the long post, but for those that know me personally know with my last car(gsr) i went through alot of setups and wasted alot of $. Although i learned alot from my mistakes I hate for other people to do the same.

2600 lb. 00 Civic Si w/ Bone Stock LS & 60-1
Best ET: 12.23 @ 111
Best MPH 12.52 @119
(on slicks of course)
I would say in a 2300 lb. EG that would be an 11 sec car with no troubles

Rods, pistons, block guard, 60-1. After that, it's all in the tuning.

Damn so you guys are acutally running 60-1s with lower psi... How much boost are you guys running with that huge beast? I thought they werent so efficient at lower boost levels.. Paul Vang and myself will be tuning the car-- so you know it'll be nothing but top notch..
