go all the way to the bottom. they have a composite gasket/fire ring combo. maybe that will take care of the problem.

Yeah, you definitely need that if it isn't in your wastegate now.

well my wastegate has a little lip on it but i cant tell if its a mchined lip or this type of ring hammered in there. I cant seem to get it out so im thinking it might just be the machined groove. ANyone know if the tial has a machined groove on it aside from the fire-ring (pictured above)?

I am building bost and holding boost fine but i think the leak is hurting my spool times...

That's the valve seat, if you don't have that then your wastegate won't work right at all.

If you just need a gasket that will seal, then get the Turbonetics gasket; it has a metal ring in it and mine held up well to over 20 PSI of boost. The regular metal layered gaskets leaked after a day or so.

so without that valve seat it wont work at ALL? Cause it works right now, just it sounds like its leaking from the wastegate/exhaust manifold. Right now im using a multilayer gasket with a ring in it, but im not sure if its holding up.

Anyone have a pic of the tial with the fire-ring installed?

if you dont have the valve seat it wont hold any boost. you said its holding boost, but you can hear it leaking. i usually run the fire ring gasket and some high temp silicone. on my 40mm i just use the valve seat with no gasket or sealant and it works fine..

My TIAL 38mm had the valve seat ring, as does every other TIAL 38mm WG I have ever seen. I accidentally put one on there without it and it didn't build boost worth a crap. It would eventually build boost, but not like it did with the ring in it. The valve is a bit open with the ring missing.

To check for a leak, get a long piece of small rubber or silicone hose, put one end in your ear, and run the other end around the base of the wastegate with the car running. You will hear any leaks.

how bad did it effect spool time? or did it even spool at all?

every 38mm i have seen has the seat ring. I never run gaskets between the manifold and WG. that way it cant blow out. you might get a few little drips of carbon/water when its cold but thats a lot better than taking the WG off every month, for me at least.

I've had the same problem with my 38mm on my manifold. I have replaced the gasket many times and it still leaks after 4 or 5 days....sucks. It is still holding boost fine, but sounds bad and gives the engine bay a dirty look. so does turbonetics make a similary gasket? cause i'm tired of going through gaskets too.....

It spooled, just later than it did with the seat in it.

Yopu want part #20142 if you have a TIAL 38mm WG. I blew out every gasket in a few days until I tried this one. This one never failed, running 20+ PSI for a year or so on it, drag racing, road course racing, etc.

And maybe some of us don't want a "few little drips of carbon/water".
