im currently not running a boost controller and i have a tial 44mm wastegate. so i believe i cap the top of the wastegate off and run the side port to a vacum line on the throttle body. if that is correct i have this "reference" line thats just sitting open.

that fitting on your turbo goes to the bottom port of your wastegate. since you are not running a boost controller, then you leave the top port of your wastegate open, do not cap it!!! otherwise the diaphragm in the wastegate will not be able to be pushed up to bleed off pressure from the exhaust.

It's essentially the same as how it's specified in the diagram. The key being "before the throttle plate".

the diagram is the same really. the wastegate needs a boost source that is before the throttle plate like stated above. its better to have the wastegate get its reference as close to the source as possible. boost will be more stable. thats my opinion and i'm sure others. think about what is happening in the system. exhaust gas spins the turbo which creates boost. the wastegate bleeds off exhaust pressure based on the reference boost, thus controlling the boost. the spring determines how much reference boost is required to open the gate.
