what's the difference between the VAFC 'hack' and this setup..
i know how the vafc hack works and that is, no fmu and missing link, 450cc injectors in place of the stock injectors and setting the vafc at -40. basically, that's how the 'hack' works.
i came across a setup on a SiR which consists of:
- drag gen 3 kit
- spearco intercooler
- hks super sequential bov
- tial wastegate
- aem cam gears and pulleys
- apex avc-r
- apex itc
- apex vafc
- msd ignition components
- stock ecu, stock internals, stock injectors
- cluchnet stage II clutch kit
what's puzzling me is his fuel setup. he still uses the supplied FMU and inline pump and i think he used some kind of check valves/missing link for the map(not sure) and he only uses his stock injectors and vafc. he used to use RC 310 injectors with his setup but it was running very rich so his tuner put back the stock injectors and he got 202.2HP and 144.1 ft-lbs on the dyno and 13.8 at the track and he's only boosting 5psi.
his vafc settings are:
4000 = -30
4600 = -50
5200 = -50
5800 = -35
6200 = -18
6800 = -20
7200 = -20
7800 = -15
VTEC 5900
low to hi = -30
then there's this(don't know what's the 7): BTDC7@0
his ITC settings are:
800 = +11
2400 = +9
4000 = +5
5600 = +3
7200 = +2
his cam gear settings are:
in +1; ex +3
now could someone explain why his vafc is working with his stock injectors? how did the vafc play a role in his setup when he could just use the FMU and inline pump right?
lastly, on a VAFC, is -30 more fuel(richer) than -40?
any insights will be appreciated.

Simple. Rather than using large injectors to deliver the fuel he needs, he is using a boost dependent FMU. He is using the vafc to fine tune areas of his power band where the increased fuel pressures are delivering more fuel than needed. It is a dinosaur setup, but it works for low boost applications.

Re: what's the difference between the VAFC 'hack' and this setup.. (sharkcohen)
I was wondering the same thing...I'm running the same setup as him, VAFC, FMU, Inline, and Missing Link. For some reason I keep throwing a map sensor code ...maybe it's the wiring. Can someone please answer which setup is better: VAFC, FMU, and Inline or VAFC, 370's/440's?, and In-tank for a GSR running 8-10lbs.??

afc and dsm 440/450 injectors set at -35% until u can tune it. its the best way, realy, since the fmu's can always stick and running super high fuel pressure isnt always a good thing... its simpler this way

what i don't understand is, why is his settings all negative "-" when he's only using STOCK injectors? shouldn't he be adding more fuel, so it should be "+"? i'm confused. i'm not very familiar with using vafc yet so if anyone have a better explanation i would appreciate it.

it seems hes actaully using the vafc for what it is designed for,im totally against the afc hack,seems stupid to use a $300 unit in place of a $40 missing link.
i use rc 370's,vafc and a missing link basically.i use my vafc for tunning and its set up around + 20 or + 30 in some places,i have not used my wideband yet to see exactly where it needs to be set.
what im getting at is im using the missing link to handle the ecu codes and im using my vafc to tune the injectors,which is what the vafc is actaully for,with the 370's i dont use a fmu.i use a aem with is 1:1 ratio.
there r a few people now making things to control the dsm's,and can make them for less than $25 at radio shack.
the guys set up from above is just using his vafc like he should be,i could not tell you why it is set so low,must have to do with the fmu,if it where my set up id get rid of the fmu,throw the 310's back in it and richen it up with the vafc.run it on a wideband,log it and make adjustments.
