Default What is the use of an air filter on the turbo??

I have heard that having an air filter on the turbo losses hp. How come? What is the point of having the air filter other than to stop rocks and other particles from coming in? Also, is there any difference if you have a 3" air filter vs. a 2" air filter on the turbo? And is it better to have cold air coming in (near the bottom of the car) or hot air (near the top of the turbo) coming into the turbo?

The reason why I'm asking is b/c I only have enough room to attach a 2 inch filter with piping to the turbo pointing down (L shape pipping). But if I turn the pipping upward I can attach a 3-4inch filter to it but it will be surrounded by hot air coming from the engine. What is the best way to do this...

air filter is so you dont suck anything bad into your turbo/engine. you will lose only a little hp if the proper size air filter is used. a filter too small will have more of a hp loss.

so if I have a 2inch filter to a turbo t3/t4, will that give enough air to it?

I have always run a filter on my turbo's, its not worth ruining the compressor blades. Everyone says that just the screen filter hasnt caused problems, but after 20,000-30,000 miles check out the blades. If you live a dusty area say goodbye to your turbo. Besides, what are you going to lose 5whp maybe? The apexi filter probably flows tons of cfm's. I would say that a t3/t4 would need at least a large 2.5" filter. K&N makes tons and tons of fitlers in the 2.5" diameter, you have many styles to choose from. I would choose a long length, and have it flare from 2.5" to 4" then taper down to 2.5" again at the end.

Not only that but dirt can cause your seals to go bad.
