What is the difference between the S300 and S400 series turbos by BW?
I picked up a S400 for a mustang project. It is the S472 aka S400sx3. I cant find the information anywhere on why it is a S400?
Thanks

The s400 are the original compressor cover and turbine combination from the off the shelf Rig units. The difference b/w the S372 and S472 is simply the compressor cover. The s400 is just a tad bigger. But what is even larger is the S475, S480, and S488.

It is an S400SX because that is what that turbo is. Bullseye is a BW distributor and calls them S3xx turbos, but all the parts are actually S400 series parts. The "T4" bolt pattern is more commonly an S300 bolt pattern in Borg Warner world, but also existed on some S400 housings. These turbos use S400 housings that had the smaller bolt pattern.

I tell you what is frustrating and this thread aids this... The lack of total information on bullseye turbos on their website. Im about to buy one and still cant find 100% information on the units. The s366xl is non existent on their site and the housing options between different dealers always varies until you ask and wait on answers for questions that you shouldn't have to ask!!!!!

Man U FTW
^^I do agree with that. Sure, you can ask for the info and get it, but there isn't a great source (like Bullseye's website) with all the options, variations and configurations listed in detail...

In the age of the internet information overload of misconceptions and posts, many creators of turbochargers will only inform their dealers of other combinations not normally available online in order to protect some of their intellectual property (as is their right). Considering that BW turbochargers a little different, even vendors can get confused as to which options are where. That is where several of us turbo designer guys can come in to fill the gaps where you need.
Just remember:
It took over 10 years for Garrett to finally come out to the public without going through Turbonetics or other dealers, and over 5 years ALONE to get their site available with MOST of the turbochargers available. (Hell, even on turbobygarrett.com, they've left out over 50 MORE combinations and available turbochargers.). So if BW didn't have every little piece of info sitting right there at your fingertips, its kinda the way of the world. Give it some time.
Get used to it. some things just aren't available with a click of a button.

Housings, V-band flanging and turbine wheel choices are what make this different. The S400 is a BOX unit, where there are no options in the turbine wheel housings or flanges. you must weld your own v-bands, flanges and machine your own turbine wheels to fit.
