Default What causes boost threshold???

Hi all,

Just letting you all know that I'm genuinely new and just created this account today.

To start off I know what boost threshold is and besides how it works but what causes boost thershold? For example is it something to do with a larger turbo. The reason why I'm asking is not only I lve been in and driven many boosted cars but as soon as ive experienced my friends Lude his boost doesn't kick in till like after 5000rpm. The feeling is just awesome and it kicks in like crazy.

Although my h22 Accord is stock atm I have some $$$ saved up to boost and I'm aware about the frm block as I am planning on building it too.

If I would to turbo my car what additions are setup will I need so my car will create a boost threshold. I have tried googling a$$ off on this for months and found nothing and unless it's not possible I only want to boost my car if I can create that boost threshold and doesn't matter how late I just love to feel it kinda like vtec but in a crazier way

Thanks in advance.... I'm just dying to get my answer solved!

You say you've searched, but...

Turbochargers ? Turbo lag vs boost threshold - Nulon blog

So let's make sure we understand. You intentionally want to mismatch your turbo, just so you can get a sudden bit of power delivery? So, to translate, you want to do something that is completely backasswards of how things should be done?

This thread is gonna be fun.

I read on the interweb somewhere that someone makes these things called programmable boost controllers. I just started learning about cars yesterday but i heard about those.

Nice just looked it up. Apparently there are three types which are the msd programmable launch control boost controller, ams-1000 and the turbosmarte-boost 2. So a Programmable boost controller is what I need. You da man thanks.

You want to create a boost threshold? that's easy. put a turbo on a car. There's no such thing as NO boost threshold on a turbo car. Lag is different of course.

You know what's crazier? a LOW boost threshold with a properly sized turbo with minuscule lag! You hit the gas and BOOST. You're at cruising speed with a short ratio gear box, hit the gas, BOOST. no waiting for crap. Way more exciting than "Wait for it...wait for it...wait for it...BOOOOOOST...LIMITER"

There's more than those three. You must have been on only page 1 of your google results.

BTW, you 're using the term boost threshold very incorrectly. Boost threshold is not a condition that is caused by a phenomenon, to be avoided or prevented; it is a position of gas energy based on the engine speed at which there is sufficient exhaust gas flow to generate positive manifold pressure, or boost.

In other words, EVERYONE has a boost threshold given an engine speed, displacement, turbocharger type and manifold pressure.

This is different from the common interweb use of the term "spool", which is actually past the boost threshold point at which for a given engine speed, a turbocharger reaches a specific target boost pressure.
