If you have lots of blow-by and a minor loss of vaccum, then you probably did crack the ringlands. Been there done that twice. The first time, I swapped in a stock motor, the second time I went for a more cost effective fix and just swapped the piston. Like I said, if you really just need the car to run, just fix what's broken. It's worth the time if you are short on money. Then again, I just graduated and have nothing to do all day. I know you are in school (right now?) but if you decide to repair it doesn't take that long. BTW, does the engine run at all?
