What does it sound like when the wastegate starts to open or dump exhaust gas out? I personally think my car is running strong and no problems. I retarded the timing on my R to about 14 deg, might go a little more when I get colder plugs. Anyways, I was with a bunch of other "NA" type-r guys last night, and when I drove by them under partial acceleration (building boost) they ALL said they heard my engine detonating.

I PERSONALLY think it's just the wastegate and they don't know WTF they're talking about. My engine doesn't sound rattling marbles in a tin can at all, just a fluttering type of noise when im on the throttle building boost. Please someone put my mind to ease, or tell me that im stupid so I'll get this **** tuned asap. (I think my car feels great all the way to 9k rpm tho.)

hey im in your same boat, when i floor it and the wg is open all the way it makes a wird flutter sound. I think sometimes its detonation, but I dunno. Im running rich.

The wastegate only opens at full boost. You should be able to tell the difference between pinging and a huge exhaust "leak"

i never really heard pinging before so i dont know what it sounds like. Neone got incabin clips of pinging?????

that fluttering youre hearing is more exhaust than pinging. notice how it only goes off at WOT while you build boost?

In his case the wastegate starts to open on boost, aka "no boost controller"

I think there could very possibly be a leak where the wastegate mounts to the manifold. I'll just wait till I get the tial to see if the problem gets fixed. The thing is, it doesn't sound like there's an exhaust leak or that fluttering noise until I get into the 4-5k+rpm's.

I think its ur waste gate opening dumping excess boost into atomosphere...u have a drag 3 kit right?
