Turbo not spinning while idle ?!
First off, I am not getting ANY boost at full throttle or partial throttle. The gauge goes to 0 mmHg, , then nothing above that.
I have the intake tube off of the turbo and while the car is idling, the blades of the cold side are not spinning. When I rev the engine, the blades will start spinning, but once I let off... the blades will stop spinning rather quickly.
Is this normal ? I've been looking for any leaks in the piping, but nothing and can't figure out why I'm getting no boost. Could my center section need a rebuild ?

So.....if you had a 1.6 SOHC and a big *** turbo, the blades wouldnt spin even at idle...just from the exhaust going from the manifold to the muffler?? Not trying to call you out, just trying to get a better understanding of what you are saying

I agree. A 1.6 SOHC probably wouldnt spin an SC61 at idle . But I mean it would have to be a big *** turbo....just my $.02 cents

I have seen plenty of turbos not spin at idle. as long as it spins when reved your probably fine. 90% sure your problem lies elsewhere. I would guess a blow off valve problem or the wastegate is stuck open or something.
what does your car idle at? that may have something to do with it, the tubine wheel is not completely sealed inside the housing it may only have enough air to creep around the blade and slip out the turbine. it is totally normal for it not to spin at idle. but for some motors and different setups it may not be, might wanna check the play in the shaft too.

My car Idles at 1500 - 3000 rpm and sounds like a scoobie, once I put it in gear it lowers but is still loud as hell. My setup I have a D15Z4 ( JDM ) its 1.5. I have a 2ft long by 1ft high intercooler mounted infront. I normally start to spool at 2500 RPM and hit boost at 3000 full boost at 3500 - 4000. My turbos a RX7 2nd gen ( HT-185-25), I have 2 1/2 inch exaust pipe a cat and 2 resinaters. It is automatic ( My mother used to drive it) Im about ready to install a gearbox. Oh and my internals are stock otherwise.
Thanks for all your input im going to take the turbo off and see if i can get a turbo specialist to look at it and see if he can fix it. Other wise im thinking about getting a B16A2 - B18 and boosting it ( im adicted to boost.)

Sounds like you may have other issues beyond the turbo. A 1.5 SOHC may not provide enough gas exhaust volume to spin the Hitachi at "idle".

Even if the thing doesn't spin at idle (which I don't see why it wouldn't if it idles at 1500 RPM) why would it come to a quick stop when he lets off the throttle? Any turbo with good bearings is going to sit there and freewheel for a while even if there's no exhaust going through it. I think it's your bearings.
Did you buy the turbo used? I'm guessing it probably wasn't taken care of very well. How is the shaft play on the turbo?

Just having an similiar problem, but if the seals are good, now what can yall say? I have bought an new turbo and still dont spin..we all know what it takes to make it spin but its not even though the engine is fine..just damn weird..phuc
if you just installed the turbo and it is brand new, it won't spin at idle untill it is fully heat cycled. i thougt the same thing untill i drove around for an hour, came back home and saw it was spinning at idle
