Default Turbo b16a - same piston blows 3 times within 1000 miles

anyone heard of this? i have a stock turbo'd b16a.

with a small t28 turbo @ 8psi. #3 piston blew on a street tune

shop said it was injectors -> change injectors from 440 to 550's - > replace rings on all pistons - > replace blown piston - hone all cylinders -> dyno tune = 197whp @ 8psi. #3 piston blows the next day

shop said it was the wiring on my injectors (b16a swap was not done by them) - > rewire injectors properly -> replace blown piston. I change my set up to a t3 60/.63 at the same time -> dyno tune = 233whp @ 8psi. #3 piston blows 350miles later (not rly pushing it because scared to blow piston again.....) tuned on 91 octane but ran solely on 94 octane with mobil 1 15w50 synthetic oil

what would possibly cause such a re-occurance

shop is currently trying to figure it out but tbh the owner didn't seem very hopefull when i spoke to him. i just want to know for my own curiosity at this time what you guys think

(shop is a very reputable honda only garage, with a very good track record and hundreds of builds under their belt. tuner works for shop and is just as reputable and even works for a pro honda racing team, so i dont think tuning was the issue)

Do you have pictures of the blown piston(s)? That could give us a little hint as to what caused this...

Also, pictures or description of the rest of the setup would be nice. There has to be some kind of oddity causing all of this...there's simply no way that it could be coincidence

Find a new tuner??

Is it somehow overboosting? I see you have a no-name wastegate and they haven't always been known to be the most reliable units out there. Did your tuner put some kind of overboost protection on the tune? Did you see anything abnormal on the wideband prior to this happening?

Nothing in your setup screams "I'm the issue!" It could be a tuning-related problem. Who tuned it? Reputable?

That's a decent link. I haven't been on HMT for a long time, but they're still good for something it seems. Further down that link, they list a few reasons why #3 could have problems...i would think an experienced tuner would already know this and account for it in the tune

ummm, is your wastegate vacuum line laying on your exhaust manifold??

what do your spark plugs look like, pics of the pistons, how new is your wideband sensor and have you been burning oil to de calibrate it

tune issue maybe... #3 always runs hotter than the rest due to ignition events around the cylinder before it ignites.... probably need to add 2-3% fuel into just that cylinder

i currently dont have the car, the shop does. so i cant get pics of anything at the moment

it was never overboosting. always 8.5psi, which would taper down to about 7 by redline

my spark plugs were very black. #4 was wet. (gas? oil?)

i only had the car for little increments of time in the last few months so it was hard to guage oil usage. but from what i say when i was checking, it didn't seem to lose any

my AFR was always within proper range (14.7-15.5 cruising, 11.5-12.2 WOT)

in the pic its hard to tell, but there is nothing making physical contact with my manifold

the ONLY thing I found "sketch" was that sometimes, when I hit the rev cut, my CEL would blink (no as a shift light, like throwing a code)

my *theory* is that since i only had a FUEL CUT, when I hit rev cut, it would cut fuel, and cause the engine to lean out a bit, and since its such a high compression engine, theres less room for error, and since #3 is the "weakest" it lets go. (the fix being to get something like hondata s300, which has the option to cut fuel and spark) thoughts??

Ah I think the factory cut is a fuel cut. That's all I have enabled currently.

Wantboost is right about the added fuel in cyl 3, I have mine set at +3, as I've seen other cars from good tuners have. The oil on the 4th piston could be due to a bad intake valve seal

did you set +3 fuel in what engine management. be great if i can do this in s300

and fuel cut is fine. does s100 have datalogging. thats what id check to see what changed right before it happen and check the plugs and piston for detonation. if the shop didnt check that than id move to a new tuner

the s300 should have individual cylinder trims
