Icon2 trying to understand wastegates please help

okay so my setup will be at about ~8 psi. i just purchased a Tial 38 mm wastegate with a 20psi spring rate. its the last piece my setup was waiting on. i have a turbo smart manual boost controller, just to double check so that i understand correctly... so the spring rate is what i can build boost up until (for example with this i can have a set up boosting up til 20 psi and at 20 the wastegate would open)? and it would just be up to the boost controller to set the psi? so even if its rated till 20psi will it open reliably at 8 or 9 or whichever psi i set it at? or does the spring rate have to match the psi set on the boost controller (for example id need a 8 psi spring rate to boost 8 psi )

No the spring rate is what it will minimally boost. If its 20 psi spring it won't go any lower than 20

so would the spring rate need to be lower than my ideal boost level? for example if i wanna boost 8 psi id need one to be like 8 psi or 4psi?

im still new to boost and no matter how much i research there are just somethings that need to be abit more simplified lol thanks for the help

just making sure i get you.. (super laymens term lol)

if the spring rate is 20 psi... then if i set the boost control at 8psi. it will overboost until 20 psi regardless? as in if i floor my car in second gear it will hit 20 psi instead of holding 8 psi until i let go of the accelerator?

Boost controller is to add more boost on top of the spring pressure. You have to start lower and then add with a controller

okay so i bought a 20 psi spring rate wastegate. that means i should have 2 springs inside. one for 15psi and one for 5psi. by your explanation i should leave only the 5psi spring ?

If you have an 8PSI the gate opens to say as you get closer to 8PSI. With that said you normally don't hit 8PSI, it would be just under that amount as the door is opening as you get closer to the spring rate, progressive. Now if you run two springs, one at 15 and one at 5, you combine them, so that would be 20PSI total.

There is a discussion here about it:

Yes, just run the small red spring. Here: http://www.tialmedia.com/documents/w3_tial_38_sp.pdf

good info but not much info there on the link, let me try to clarify. i have a turbosmart boost controller (manual). and i just bought a tial wastegate with 20 psi spring rate (that spring rate can only be done with 2 springs) so my question is if im gonna boost around 8 or 9 psi, should i leave the wastegate with both springs (20 psi) or should i choose the smaller or larger spring? (5psi or 15 psi)

since i have the option of either leaving them at 20psi, 15psi or 5psi spring rate which would be best for my setup.

Boost controllers can only increase the boost level, not lower it. If you use the 5psi spring, you will be able to boost 5+psi. If you use the 15psi spring, you will be able to boost 15+psi.

If you want 8-9psi, use the 5psi spring, then adjust the boost controller until you reach your desired pressure.

When I got my Tial I was expecting certain spring rates to my surprise they were different. I hope I didn't miss if someone mentioned this already they have color paint on them and a chart on their web site so you know what each spring is. I ended up with one being a 9lb and I think the other a 10 or something.

Two options...#1. Change the spring to either the big yellow or small blue one. #2. Refer to quote below
