Tapping noises from head
Jason, i can fix i, but id have to go buy a new bushing and bolt from honda or somewhere, and its hard to find bushings tomorrow on July 4th, Anybody have any? And if you knew me well Jay, you'd know im not lazy. Just broke and budgeted. But like i said, anyone have any rear control arm bushings? or a whole arm? anything, i wanna race!

now as far as the noise goes, try doing a vale adjustment. also what are your spark plugs gapped to? should be a max of .030 i usually run .028 on mione. also you shoudl be running a plug that is 2 steps colder than stock. what about your fuel? are you using the good quality named brand or some off the wall 7-11 crap?
finally tunning, who tuned the car? is it properly tunned?
all thsoe htings can come into play and cause a tapping noise in the motor. but again if you really had piston slap guys, your motor would be blowing up.
fyi, arias sucks hands down. go with endyn pistons next time. they work much better.</TD></TR></TABLE>
oscarmayer...i think you're kinda talking nonsense...if the pistons were to actually hit the head...there would be more noise than just tapping. you'd either get bent valves or a blown motor. i'd think pistons hitting the head would sound more like rod knock!!

I haven't played with the cam gears at all, they are already at zero, but I do appreciate the advice. I'm gonna set the valves again soon.

piston slap is when you have too much piston to wall clearances and when your piston goes up and down it tends to 'slap' against the cylinder walls. that my friend is what piston slap is...i know because i had it before when building my first motor. the piston hitting the head is NOT piston slap...that's something else...something more worrifying!!

Just pulled the head off the car.
The head looks fine. But the block might have some issues.
Number 1, 2, 3 cyl. looks fine, but #4 might be a problem.
At TDC, #4 goes up but not totally to the top.
Goes about 1mm short. I could feel it with my fingers and I could see it also.
Like I said before, I should just stick with stock motors. I have better luck with them.
On a side note:
My first built motor went on the 3rd day.
My second built motor went on the 3rd day also.
What a coincidence.
On another side note:
1st stock motor held up a little over a year. (12.0@116 best pass)
2nd stock motor still going over 2 years now. (11.42@119 best pass)
Another coincedence.

you forgot the compression numbers...
#1 160
#2 150
#3 160
#4 145
Do these number seem high for a 8:1 compression motor?
The motor does not have any build problems.... ran in a friends car for 3k miles only thing he had was piston slap... Another question for any tuners out there... high compression turbo motor and low compression turbo motor... low compression turbo motor would use less fuel to obtain stoich right? so say a car was tuned for stock comp... turbo would these tuning setting be usable for the lower compression motor with same setup?

If that piston is not going all the way up then you have a bent rod possibly from hydrolock? You bought this used from someone? The compression numbers are not consistent at all.

i have a tick comming from the distributor area, its in the head/and or distributor. It sounded like valves but i checked and they were in spec.??? so i still dont know what is it but its louder on startup and for like 10 min after, then it goes almost completely away but its still there just very faintly, its been doing it for like a year any ideas????
If its been doing it for a year, and still no reliability issues, it should be ok, but I could be wrong.
Im taking the motor apart this week and Im going to see what happened to the block..
I will let you guys know what really happend so if anyone has this problem, we can always go back on this thread.
For now, going back to stock motor.
Thanks everyone.
