which t3/t04e turbo for b16?
whats up honda-tech, i have a question for you guys..
im going to be turboing my b16 an i will be using a peakboost turbo kit, the bottom end is stock the head is built, full valvetrain, has BC3 cams (will be changed out for gsr cams when boost comes).. skunk2 manifold, throttle body etc... anyway back on track..
the peakboost kits comes with a t3/t04e, either 50, 57, or 60 trim turbo an this is where im not sure which one.. i want full boost as soon as possible but i also want it to hold boost up until 8000-8500rpms.. i will be boosting the b16 on stock bottom end and in the mean time i have a LS bottom end i want to build with forged pistons and rods, keeping stock sleeves however the LS bottom end will NOT be done soon.. so i want this turbo to work good on the b16 and on the lsvtec turbo when it is done.. Ive been doing research on the A/R and how to pick it, and if i understand correctly, if i go with a .63 A/R it will be my best best an hold boost further then a .48 A/R... this car is NOT a daily driver, however it is a street car, it is on pump gas, i dont really have a horsepower goal just because of the fact it is a stock bottom end and it is limited so when i go to my tuner we'll see what i can get. so basically my choices are the turbo's listed above, im looking for the turbo that will suite both the b16 very well an the ls vtec very well. reach full boost asap and hold boost till about 8000-8500 rpms.. thank you.

i would go with the .63 a/r for any of the turbos and there really is not to much of a diffrence peak power wise to me from a 57 trim and a 60 they flow close to the same amount of air i run a 57 on my lsvtec if you plan on swaping turbos down the road for something alot bigger then i would say grab the 50 trim now for the spool over the others since i dont think you plan on making 400hp on your stock block it will be fine

But yes, speak with your tuner, and set a hp goal, because depending on your target, will greatly reflect your tuner's margin for error if you shoot too high.
The Peakboost Kit is a very nice and very efficient turbo kit, so spool maximization will be very responsive with any of those three turbos, the 50 trim being the winner here. But that all leads back to setting a hp goal, because all three turbos have different CFM ratings, which, in my opinion, would sway me towards the 60 trim, so I could reach my goal with possibly less psi than the 50 or 57 trim, but thats just me.

thanks for the reply's .. which will lead me to my next question.. do they all have similar spool characteristic's??. i was leaning towards the 57 trim before i posted because it has a more max power output then the 50 but i also want good and fast spool.. but like i said i do plan to upgrade to a built ls bottom end, and when i do i would like to keep the same turbo an not have to upgrade right away (which im sure i will eventually).. i would like to get full boost no later then 5000 but sooner is definitly better but i do want to be able to hold boost until 8500.. but as far as h/p goals.. since it is a stock bottom end i would like to get as much hp out of it as possible without blowing it up lol.. from looking at other peoples stock b16 setup's it seems like alot of people are staying at 400whp or lower..

I think you should still set a hp goal, BECAUSE OF that very reason. The b16 is a very stout motor in stock form (depending on the health of the engine and tune), and you can run a very strong hp number with stock block internals.

Realistically, if the 57trim and the 60trim both had a .63a/r running the peakboost kit on a B16 like the OP will be, how much more lag are we talking to reach for example 10lbs?
I like the idea of having less boost to make more power but didn't know what actual lag difference we are talking here?
From what I have read, a good rule of thumb for a stock B16 is to try and stay around or under 300WHP, after that its getting a little risky.

well since you are planning on keeping the same turbo for both motor builds i would say the 57 trim or 60 you will not notice the diff in spool trust me and all of them will make boost before 5000 with them i am running a peakboost kit on my lsvtec with a 57 trim

is your ls vtec built? .. stock sleeves? .. if you dont mind, what kind of power are you putting out with an ls vtec turbo on the 57 trim an when does it reach full boost? .. i was leaning towards the 57 trim with the .63a/r for the fact that its a little bigger then the 50 trim, will produce more power for now, and later with the ls bottom end an if it does spool a little slower then the 50 trim it shouldnt be by much.. i figure if it does have some lag it shouldnt be too much, b16's rev high, an when racing your always in high rpm's and i have a 2-step for launching to create boost.

full-boost at certain rpm's is in discretion of what your target boost is at ( example, 5 psi fullboost RPM is diffrent from 10 psi ya dig?)
a 50 trim t3t4 63 AR is PERFECT ** for street car/autoX/track monster good spool characteristics and we've tried and true tested them to 400 WHP on pump gas with no methanol, no race gas and ran them 11.9 in full weight integras that are daily driven with a short tubular manifold ( spoolin performance quick4)
the customer switched out to a 57 trim and instantly regretted it, although he gained 30 WHP max, he lost significant midrange and streetability, auto-xing the car was not nearly as linear and smooth as it was before and quick laggy in the hairpin turns.
if you want around 400 max. i'd pick a turbo that is used to its fullest potential and gives you the greatest powerband.
only downside is the 50 trim is rare/ hard to get and about 80-100$ more than the 57 and 60 trims. Hence, I stock up on 50's once they become available from my distributors because garrett has such a long lead time due to the popularity of the 50 trims in the DSM world

i do look at the dates. my question isn't really answered though. so if i start a new thread i get ragged on because it's been asked a million times already but if i go and do the "research" like everyone says to do and ask questions i get yelled at too. cant win on honda-tech i guess.

On my old b16a setup I had stock head and Precision sc34-31 and made 325 hp and 230 ft-lbs of torque on 12 lbs of boost. Now with my full port/ polish head, bisimoto level 2.4 cams, bw 68mm TB, skunk2 valve train, and port matched OBX intake mani I hope to make around 400 hp at least. Stock sleeves.
I may even bump it up to 14 lbs of boost.
