stock sleeves and bearing surfaces question
i took apart a spare y8 block and I am wondering about the sleeves and the bearing surfaces.
i can feel slight scratches in the sleeves, although my finger does not catch on them. I believe a hone would help resurface the sleeves to a smooth surface.
The main bearing surfaces also are smooth, but some have some "spotty-ness" where it looks like there was wear on the surface. I will stress again that it is smooth, but i'm concerned about it.
what are your thoughts?

You dont want the cylinders to be smooth, the scratching that you feel in there is from when the block was last honed, this allows the rings to seat properly.. If your going to rebuild the motor I would get it rehoned..

i will definately get it honed,
the sleeves are currently smooth like glass, with the exception of what i mentioned above...
however i am still concerned about my main bearing surfaces

Put new bearings in it while you have it all apart..

i will be definately be using new bearings, but i want to make sure that the bearing surfaces are healthy enough to be reliable.

You mean the journals? They should be very smooth.. If not you might want to have them micropolished..

no, i meant the bearing surfaces on the block.... maybe they have to be micropolished also? I always thought that was done only on the crank

Re: stock sleeves and bearing surfaces question (igo4bmx)
yeah thats only the crank that needs a micro polish, the journals are a friction surface, while the bearings don't move on the block and main caps. your talking about the surface under the bearings not the bearing surface correct? cause I think your confusing people by saying bearing surface people are thinking your talking about the surface the crank sits on...
your should be ok, maybe check the line bore down all the caps to make sure it's strait.

this should help...

Did the "spotty-ness" look like slides 24-25?
