SOHC turbo gurus, Need help quick!!!
Hey guys I'm in the process of installing a greddy kit on my d16z6 right now and I am lacking instructions. I am unsure of the vacuum hose routing on the turbo itself. I know that you need to hook up the wastegate actuator to a vacuum source but I dont really know about the other little vacuum fitting on the turbo itself. There is a small nipple coming off the side of the turbo but I am not sure what that is for.
Also I have a blitz bov and I dont know it it needs to have a vacuum line hooked up to it.
I am new to turbo's, I used to be an N/A guy but until I got beat by my friends 4X4 Chevy Z71 I decided I need to start boostin.
I need all the help I can get guys. Also Is there anything I should know about the initial startup of the turbo? I just want to make sure that It is getting the proper lubrication and that everything will function correctly.
Thanks in advance,
Jesse

the nipple on side of compressor is connected to wastegate opens with boost. bov attaches to vacuum souce like fpr and opens at vacuum.
pull cap or plugs and crank over engine a couple of times to get oil into turbo before running.

I heard Greddy's instructions were bad but wow...
You can hook the vacuum line from the WG to the nipple on the turbo. You can also run the waste gate source from the intake manifold but first get it running. You can get your blow off valve source from in inlet line to the fuel pressure regulator.
ack, replied at same time.

The Greddy instructions really aren't that bad, it just covers the basics of the install and the copying quality of it kinda sucks. The turbo itself come preassembled, so that might be why he doesn't have instructions for the vacuum lines.
As far as it being properly lubricated, you can crank over the car a couple times w/o spark to send oil pressure to the turbo, or lube the turbo by squeezing in oil before you put on your oil lines.
For your bov vacuum source, buy a t fitting and cut your fpr vacuum line and tap it there.
Good luck and have fun with your installation.

You need to build up the oil pressure in the lines/housing to make sure that you have enough oil flowing into the plain/thrust bearings in the housing. If you dont do this, the bearings in the housing will spin dry and cause premature wear before they get enough oil pressure.

Is this true for startup of the car everytime following the initial start/breakin?

No, you just have to do that the very first time.

Thanks, I definitely appreciate the answer. I was actually worried about that, due to it being rather inconvenient. I then realized this is a turbo we are talking about. Not always the most convenient and maintenance free thing.

You said it right there dude, it can be quite a PITA. I look at it as a welcome challenge, and research before I do anything I am not sure about.

Make sure your turbo isn't damaged, like a dummy I didn't realize until 3 months later, when I went to install the kit that my internal wastegate's arm was bent from shipping, luckly Jon (The Drop Shop) was able to fix it up right, and it works good, hells if I had boosted with it bent, I would have probably blown up the turbo or boosted to 15-16psi.
