Snapped a axle..... literally
My turbo hatch snapped an axle at the track the other day. Right before the splines on the side that goes into the hub, it snapped in 2 pieces. So, one piece still had the axle nut on it, and its about 2 inches long with the complete set of splines on it (if that make sany sense).
When pulling the axle out, I noticed that the wheel bearing on this side are horribly bad... there's a lot of play in the wheel. Is it common/possible for snapping an axle to cause wheel bearings to go out? I think I would have noticed if the wheel bearing was bad when I put my wheel on... but I'm having this horrible problem of the car pulling hard and the whole front end of the car and steering column hopping at high sheeds down the track.. but only with my slicks on.
Any thoughts?

Like this? One snapped off from the hub side, and the other one broke off in the intermediate shaft. woohoo! Notice how clean the break is on the right.

I think most of the looseness goes away when you have the axel nut torqued up. I noticed that I had horrible wobble on my wheels with no axles in the car but torquing the axel nut pulls the bearings tight.

Really? I always thought that you can check a wheel bearing with the knuckle off the car.... you just see if there's any play in the hub (or rotor if its attached)... because there's certainly a lot of play in the hub/rotor now...
...and mine looks exactly like the one on the left!

So I guess I'm defeinitely not the only person this _exact_ problem has hapened to!!!
Do you know if either of these problems (bad wheel bearing abthough it was probably caused by towing the car home with a tow rope with a busted axle or an axle that's about to break) would cause a voilent shaking of the steering column/hard pull down thw 1/4 track?

Re: (GSRswapandslow)
Cool.... I hope thats the problem.
I'm just a little worried that the wheel bearing was fine, but towing the car home (with a tow rope) is what caused the bearing to go bad... in which case, the problem leans moer towards a defective slick
