Smarter to build or buy turbo kit
Would it be more cost effective to purchase a basic kit, or to build a kit over time with better parts. thanks

Re: Smarter to build or buy turbo kit (Mase)
Custom is great because not only do you get to choose exactly what you want, but going custom actually forces you to learn about turbos and all the related goodies. There's nothing I hate more than when I ask someone what the specs are on their turbo and they just say, "I dont know, whatever came with the kit". I ended up spending more on mine than I would have for a kit, but thats only because I did pistons, rods, and other stuff at the same time. I would go custom and get some good fuel management, do it right the first time or spend LOTS more later.

Smarter to build or buy?
Usually, as stated above, if you build your own setup you learn more. Hence-smarter. As far as finances goes...building your own setup can get pretty expensive. Take you time and wait for good buys. Do it right the first time; research and seek out people that can enlighten you.
H-T is where its at.

Re: Smarter to build or buy turbo kit (rondigs)
I see building your own kit to a big advantage to buying one already done. I feel like i bought all the top of the line parts, it was exactly what i wanted, everything fits just right, and most of all, you learn alot. It does take up a bunch of your time learning about everything, but if you are really into this stuff, it is great times. I do not recommend doing this while trying to do good in school. I speak from experience .

I will also have to agree with all the people who said piece together your own turbo setup. That way you can get just the parts you want.

Build. I am in the process of doing so. For almost $1200 i have bought
t3/t4
stainless steel manifold
waste gate
BOV
HUGE *** intercooler
Some lines
dsm 450 injectors
I still gotta get
$200 more for uberchip
and some 3 in piping for exhuast and downpipe
muffler
all in all it will run me about 2k to do it all
then $1500 for my ls motor
$3500 to hit 12's on slicks
go me
later

alright consensus, build my own kit, thanks, I am going to be running a stock 95 gsr engine, and probably 7-10 psi depending on where I decide to put it. Also what are good brands for wastegates, intercoolers, b.o.v., turbos, and manifolds? thanks
Also wondering if I have to run an inline pump, and aftermarket intank pump? I would rather just put in a 255lph in tank, instead of the inline....

Re: (v-attack)
You might want to hit up viren (b18bturbo) for some of your parts. Good guy.
Wastegate: Tial
BOV: HKS & XS are pretty popular (its really a personal preference)
Intercooler: PWR (contact earl or mike laskey-great intercooler, great price)
Turbo: another personal perference-precision, garret, and turbonetics. The size is completely dependent upon what goals you might have.
Manifold: Another personal preference. Budget can be a major deciding factor on this one. I deicded to go with the full-race mani.
Hope that helps. You'll find that people tend to disagree on what works best.
In other words...there is no such thing is best. Do some research and go with something you feel is reliable.

PWR. what does that stand for or do you have a website, thanks
I want it to be daily drivable that is why I dont want to go with more than 10lbs of boost, I am probably going to go with a t3/t4 because of powerband and it will be on a stock motor. thanks

Re: Smarter to build or buy turbo kit (KCHybrid)
This was the "kit" I got (RevHard 2C)
Rev Hard Iron/Tubular Manifold
Precision SC34 .60/.63
Rev Hard/Spearco 29x8x3.5 Intercooler
Tial 35mm Wastegate
HKS SSQ Bov
Rev Hard 2.5" Downpipe
2.25" intercooler piping
2.5" Charge pipe w/hks flange
t-bolt clamps (bought seperate)
ss oil feed line
ss oil return line (bought seperate)
All this for $2,850 shipped.
Can you really "build" a custom kit for cheaper? Using the same quality parts?

Re: Smarter to build or buy turbo kit (RyanAutry)
it might not be cheaper to go custom, but you will know how to do more than read instructions when you are done with a custom kit. Not saying you dont know your ****, but a lot of people with kits dont.....

like I said, might be. Depends on how overboard you go and what quality parts you get. But that wasnt my point, you learn more going custom.

Re: Smarter to build or buy turbo kit (v-attack)
I say you buy a greddy kit. Why? Because its a great kit and comes with everything including instructions. And after that you could move up and build your own custom kit. The only thing that will problably be different is the FMU and the External Wastegate.
