Default Sleeve thickness?

Does anyone know how thin the sleeves can be before cracking? I obtained a gsr block for free with unknown steel sleeves that is bored out to 83mm and the sleeve thickness is 5.7mm but plan on boring it to 83.5. The setup will not make anymore than 550whp. Just wondering if it will handle that power.

With a resleeved block you can go to 84.5, a few people run 85 but most don't recommend it. I'd try to determine what sleeves you have before you put time and money into it.

If you recieved the block for free, chances are that it is stock sleeves. If this is the case, I would personally not go any thicker than 81.5mm with a boosted setup as it will not be safe with that thin of a sleeve. If the block has aftermarket sleeves (ie. golden eagle, darton, etc), you should not go any further than an 84mm bore. Sleeves will crack no matter how thick they are if the tune is not up to par. Post up some pictures of the block and I will tell you if it has stock sleeves or aftermarket sleeves. Hope this helps

I am sure that it isn't stock sleeves for they are all steel and not 1 piece. It seems that it's an old sleeve design or something and looks thin compared to today's sleeves. I will get some pics up later today. Thanks for your replys.

If they're aftermarket 83.5 should not be an issue. Post some pics, they will help

Up to 84 should be fine for boost i would not got straight to 84mm however keep it is small as possible in case you want to throw in some new pistons you can always go .5mm bigger and not worry. good luck

My concern is that they seem to have been the same thickness as stock sleeves but bored out to 83mm. So because these are steel, are they going to be strong enough knowing that they are that thin?

1 piece sleeves are not stock. Two piece, like the ones pictured, are stock

I never seen a stock block with steel sleeves. Liner yes but not the sleeve. I'm guessing you're looking at the copper o ring.

^Im pretty sure benson sleeves look similar to that as well. If it were sleeved by benson, it would be stamped by them as well

If my memory serves me right, the block was probably sleeved by benson for the shop locally which it originally came from (which is now shut down) used only benson but this was back in 2000-2002. So I'm guessing that I shouldn't run it then?

Thanks. That's a better picture than mine. For some reason the dumb *** shop that sleeved my block welded in some sort of block guard crap. But.... I believe they're la sleeves inside (even tho they sold me golden eagle). F**king shops in this industry...

Are you for sure you have a 83mm bore? Here is a pic of a 84mm bore and the thickness of the sleeves between the cylinders the same or greater than yours. Nevermind the arrow. I stole the pic from google. lol

Yes I am sure it is 83mm. Maybe it just looks thinner on mine cause there is a gap inbetween the cylinders.

I think so too. We'll see what the machine shop says.
