well what comes to mind are Resleeved blocks. Which are blocks that have the sleeves cut and replaced with a stronger/thicker type of sleeve that are pressed in.
here is a sample of the Type of sleeve that replaces the stock sleeves.
and a block with the Sleeves installed.
Here is a block with stock sleeves.
The sleeves are used for strengtening the block and it also gives the option of Boring the block bigger than the stock specs.

Sleeving: Replacing the piston sleeves with a thicker/stronger material for extra strength. Usually associated with high compression or FI motors.

there are a few styles also.
they are made of ductile iron usually.

closed dec sleeves, and the inserts you have posted up there.

woops.. ya i forgot there are Closed deck sleeves, T sleeves..
I have some other pics of those type of sleeves that we have done.. but not prepped for Forum Upload as of now..
