Welp.. that didn't really help since the turbo doesnt connect directly to the block.
You don't necessarily have to use a gasket, but if the mating surfaces are not completely flat, then you will have leakage. It's better to use one if possible.

can someone tell me which way you point the Garrett gasket? does the lip of the gasket, the part that is pushed out from the flat surface stick up toward the manifold or down against the turbo?
