Re: Should i run synthetic? (nathan's boosted civic)
i dont think it really matters as much what oil type you use. synthetic, synthetic blend, or just the regular oil... as long as you use a good brand name that you can trust. i used to use synthetic oil. since i change my oil every 2 weeks... i figured it would be cheaper to use regular oil like valvoline, castrol, or mobil.

I do that too.. hmm.. maybe I should change it every 2 weeks too My oil changes tend to happen every 4-6 weeks, depending on how the engine's running.. if its starting to feel a little slower than normal, thats when i get the oil changed and get my mechanic to adjust my valves and do a leakdown

Hmmm...actually youre not supposed to switch over to synthetic oil after you have been driving your car on regular oil for more than 1000 miles, the only time you can switch over is if you buy the car new.

dont agree with you on this man.
and YES, although i dont usually change it every 2 weeks like i used to... i still try to do it occassionally. i drive around 1,000 miles every two weeks. so what if i were to change my oil every two weeks? nothing wrong with keeping a clean batch of oil in the oil pan. sheesh!

Actually, I too heard it's reccomended not to switch to synthetic after a certain amount of miles, but it's more like 70k+ miles. By that time, the amount of wear-in on the seals and rings is somewhat more than would occur with a much thinner oil (synthetic), therefore leading to mild oil burn. I guess usuing a thicker (15w-50) synthetic oil could work too though right? Make sense? I know my Civic has over 100k miles and doesn't burn oil, but then I've been usuing Mobil 1 since it's very first change at 2200 miles and every 8k miles there after.

No no no, you read it all wrong What I was trying to say is that after your engine breaks in (second oil change) is the only GOOD time to change over to synthetic. I said nothing about how often you change your oil, if you have time to change it every week then to you! Sure you can use synthetic oil anytime you like, but i heard after a certain mileage (most likely break in period) is the best time, if you change over after like 30,000 miles, I heard it puts more stress on your bearings and seals, because it was run on thicker oil. I will try and research this more, but thats what I was told. Synthetic is definately better for turbos though.
