Default safe oil temp?

Hey guys,

Im running a b16 on about 13psi of boost, using an oil cooled twin scroll t3 turbo , have had a few issues with cooling and havent been to happy with my oil temp in a while.
Its sits at around 90°c when crusing and fully warmed up.
110°c in traffic/giving it a bit of hell.
Gave it full hell last night and see the temp gauge trying to creep up around 130°c mark.
Is this safe? Also the air temp outside was about 4°c

130C IS pushing it. how, and where are you getting your oil temps?

Your well above my safe range, but the oil is still perfectly fine @ 260, just not ideal at all. And since you state that was with a very cold ambient temp, Id say its a safe bet you will overheat the oil on a hot summer day.

A larger capacity oil pan is a great solution, and comes with alot of conveniences that a turbo car, driven hard, would benefit from for about $300 for a canton, or Im sure ebay has a knockoff for $100 if your feeling lucky..

yeah, the temps you got are a little high, but not terrible. having it happen at that cold of ambient temp concerns me too though.

a higher capacity oil pan will help, especially if it's aluminum. may not solve the problem though. I'd be leaning more towards an oil cooler of some sort. ideally I'd suggest an oil filter relocation kit with a thermostatically controlled cooler run in parallel

I would look into an oil cooler definitely. If its getting that hot while its cold outside its only going to get worse in summer time.

Completely agree with them guys and you should probably start looking into solutions if you would like to drive it in the summer.
I'm feeding coolant into oem oil cooler line then the turbo and then back into the full size Integra radiator and my oil temps on a 70 degree F day stay at 180F, after playing with it the highest I've seen is 205f but I'm sure as it gets warmer temps will go up.
Something like this could work if you have an efficient radiator and a good fan but look around into other people's builds and see what has worked for them to give you better ideas. Good luck.

210 is where I'm at on average. A long stretch in 5th I've seen it creep to 260 but it doesn't stay there. Not really worried about it for a street car.

220-240 is the sweet spot and where moisture burns off. 260 is ok but should be a synthetic oil for those kind of temps extended periods

Do you have any links to the oil filter relocation kit. Im guessing its main benifit is cooling? Im pretty new to all this keen to learn more.

As soon as im paid i'm getting an oil cooler.

But anything else to combat temp would be good to know, i didnt even concider a sump helping untill now so will defo look into that. Plan on taking the car on a few track days.

Need to be looking at causes of high oil temp Not a bandaid. The car should run low 200's cruising and mid 200's with spirited driving. If your seeing high oil temps reg driving you've got a problem IMO

If you plan on tracking it I would definitely consider the oil cooler, or at least watch closely where the temps go. Probably will have to do a cool down lap every other lap.

But as Turbo-LS said, its more of a bandaid if you are experiencing high oil temps normally driving. Your original post sounds normal to me though.

Thats a fair point, i really dont see what could be causing it, i've fixed all leaks i had with the coolant replaced cheap clips ect. Run a mishimoto rad. I think one cause and the only cause i can think for my temps being high is the coolant currently runs in to the drain plug on a -an fitting. And the fact i dont have an oil cooler

Where are you getting your oil temperature from?

To much timing. To tight of a motor will run hot. To little timing will spike egts's

Where is your oil temp sensor mounted?

I've never run an oil cooler and never had an issue. Always deleted the gsr oem oil cooler as well.

if you dont run an oem style oil cooler at the oil filter, coolant temp has less to do with oil temps than you might think. oil temps are influenced mainly by piston temp, frictional heat, and temp of the oil coming out of the turbo.

Oil temp is being read from a sandwich plate between the block and the oil filter

Yeah i didnt think coolant would influenece much coolant temp didnt appear to rise when i noticed the increase in oil temp.

Im pretty much running a stock b16 block @ 13psi producing 320 bhp mapped on hondata buy a well recomended tuner
