Default question

I have a question, someone mentioned something about the car not wanting to turn... whats the deal with that still, i mean i know you want the outside tire to spin faster then the inside tire for good handling.... but this delsol project has been the type of thing ive been looking for to do to either a crx or a delsol my self... i dont know much about hondas as my family is a FORD family... and im ready to give up my 302 v8 in my f100 truck, but only if i can have a nice handling RWD honda... was thinking of maybe putting in a s2000 motor with some modifications but.... i cant find a rear axle on ebay...found a motor and tranny for 7k tho...1 day left =p

but if i can get away with a h22a in the back... that will suit me... but only if its going to turn... gotta be a daily driver...possibly show...

Also i heard about a del sol with a sr20det engine... with a 240sx tranny... im guessing would need a new rear axle....prob 240sx modified as i dunno the width or anything..

If i could get info on that id prob do that insted... dad does restoration for old cars... 64 corvair... mustangs ect... and we have the tools.... so its definitly something i wouldnt have the stuff to do...and wuold have enough knowledge to get going in the mods, just dont know where to start in what parts id need for the sr20det... would a 240sx axle fit? or would it need to be shortened.... or what...

Umm, mid-engine cas tend to turn faster than front engine cars. If he rally needs to take a quick turn all he has to do is nail the throttle, and flip the steering wheel.
It would be easier to put weight oer the front wheels with the suspension, and from what I cn see he's already taken that into account.

Great work Cody! </TD></TR></TABLE>

Ya but the Del Sol was not designed with mid engine in mind. The suspension is deffinetly a means of helping but if there's not enough weight on the front tires, I think they just might not stick. It really has a lot to do with where over the back wheels the engine was placed, right? Plus it has a real narrow wheel base (did I say that right?) its not very long!!

How are those manifolds coming along?

i thought Honda was going to make the del sol rear engine up until like the very last moment, then went front engine/fwd, thats why the trunk area was so huge

just something i read somewhere...

Well, since the car has been ont he ground, Ive decided to not worry about weight bias any longer. The way the car was on blocks, the weight of the engine was pushing down BEHIND the blocks, making the front of the car very light.
On the ground, the car is no harder or easier to steer than before, which works for me. The engine is actually quite a bit forward in front of the rear wheels. The only thing that passes the axle path is the rear engine mount, everything else is in front of the axle, or rear wheels. With a full tank, Im betting a 55/45 weight distribution. I may actually make another manifold that puts the turbo on the front of the engine so that it helps w/the weight distribution too. We will see though, too far off, too many manifolds to make, I cant think about it, otherwise Ill just work on it.
Manifolds are slowly coming along. I wasted yesturday on a SideWinder thats too tall. $500 takes it, its impeccable except the hood wont close all the way...

ya, id dump the clutch to do a burnout or something, and everyone would laugh as the engine disslodges itself, and slams through the trunk lid/firewall.

As for going down the road straight, that wont be a problem. But launching straight...that has yet to be seen. </TD></TR></TABLE>

what measures have you taken to ensure that it will go down the road straight? Not at all trash talking, i am genuinely interested. Dont dismiss Jay Dirt, he has spent more time in chassis shops than 99.999% of the people on this board.

I was wondering the same thing. After watching shows on custom street rods and doing a little chassis research, this stuff is no joke. Tolerences are super super tight! I too would like to know how you managed to, if you did, keep everything aligned and spec'd, and did you do any planning with CAD ??

Nope...no cad planning... Tinker is more of a visual type person...he sees something in his head and goes ahead and builds it...

I too have a mid-engine RWD H22 project in the works. While I'm not nearly as far along as Cody, I have a wrecked 97 Prelude VTEC (H22A4) doner and a shop set up with all the tools and equipment I need. I just need to decide what car to receive the conversion. This is where all of you come in. I've read this entire thread and there seems to be lots of interest in this project. While my goals are a little different from Cody's, the basic project is the same...convert a front engine FWD to a mid-engine RWD. I have a long list of goals and considerations but basically I'd like to end up with something that rides, drives, handles and performs like an NSX with comperable reliability and desirability (good looks). Right now I'm leaning most heavely towards a 94-97 Integra, but I'm also considering 92-97 Civics (hatch, coupe, and del sol). I've also considered Preludes and Accords, which are heavy, but not completely out of the question. Please let me know what you whould chose and why you think it's the best choice, including what you might be willing to pay for one, or at least what you think it might be worth on the open market.

Thanks,
Dave

The chassis is stiff as a ****(or will be when Im done bracing). As for physically going straight, the axis of the axles is dead on for and aff on both sides. The only thing that might be off a little bit is the side to side. Im hoping with an alignment, everything will be groovy. If it ends up being off a lil bit, Ill just adjust the lower K frame until its dead on(cut grooves in the mounting plates). Im not saying itll be perfect, but it should be driveable(the way I drive ).

Well... if you have a shop and aren't against some work, how about starting from scratch.... http://members.***.net/kimini22/car/

Hey kb, thanks for your reply. I found and read your web page months ago and it was an inspiration. I took your advice about an understanding spouse, and while I no longer have one of those, my girlfriend Cheryl is all for this project. As a matter of fact, I'm living in her house and her 2 car garage is my "shop"! She has even gone so far as to allow her 78 TransAm Gold SE WS6 (22k mile, original owner) to wait in the driveway while I complete this project. (Tinker will appreciate she's a MI girl from the MC)

As a "body man" many years ago, I've done a number of "chop, cut, rebuild" type projects (my latest: http://www.hipercon.com/hiperconracing.htm) and WILL build a car from scratch one day, most likely a road course racecar.

Thanks,
Dave
