Default Running turbo setup without downpipe

So im putting together my turbo setup for my 88 hatch runin a d16y7 stock block, ecu is already tuned for the kit and everything, just missing a downpipe and a intercooler, Id like to at least be able to drive it to work and back, bout 5 min trip. Would i be able to do that safely without a downpipe or is that a big no no?

thats like running without a header. it would be loud as ****, and it could melt **** or start a fire in the engine bay. dont do it

ok there is one vote againsts it, dont think it would quite be like runnin without a header, maybe like runnin without the y pipe or the factory downpipe. any other input?

You can melt stuff and catch things on fire..... that should be enough for you to rethink it

just get the flange u need for ur specific turbo and take it to an exhaust shop and have them weld a pipe on there. even if its crush bent pipe that they use it would be better than nothing for temporary use.

sounds good, I got a good friend at a machine shop that could make me the flange then just weld it to some exhuast pipe... should be a fairly cheap temporary fix

yup

just to give an example. I have a buddy who swapped manifolds and with the new one the downpipe didnt fit. He drove it 10 min max to the shop to get the new one made. Luckily nothing caught fire but it half melted the harness on the altenator and killed the altenator also. So the 50 bucks he saved on the tow he had to spend 150 on a new altenator.

no downpipe=bad idea

if you have the flange can you tow it to a shop to make the downpipe? If not you might be able to just tow it to an exhaust shop to crush bend you one in the meantime.
