Default Running no PCV system? Safe?

I just installed my JG/Edelbrock manifold. I was wondering if it was absolutely necessary to install the PCV back into the maniofld?

Can I just run it open to the atmosphere with out causing harm to the engine?

your vacuum readings and idle will be off
