Default retarding the timing

ok, so when the distributor is sitting closer to the front bumper that is the timing being advanced right?and when its pushed back then its being retarded?? or did i get it backwards? and how would you know that you retarded it how many whatever degrees?? im so confused can someone help me out?

dist twisted towards bumper is retarded.....dist twisted towards firewall is advanced....

you need an "Advance Timing Light" (got mine from Sears) to see how much timing your running exactly. Otherwise you use just your basic timing light and you can set your timing by reading the marks on the crank (only set stock timing +-2 degrees).

really? mine is really retarded then, my distributor is pulled more then half the way towards the bumper..not sure, i'll check though. so what is stock timing? 0 degrees?
