retard timing?
i am runing 8 psi boost on my mini me motor setup with a garret t3. do i need to retard my timing for this amount of boost? currently i have it set to 16 just like and NA setup.

just got it ....i dont know much about turbos. and yes i plan on tuning it. and i do beleive timimng falls into tuning category so i am trying to do just that. and it may be tuned im not sure

You need to get some kind of standalone so you can tune it right...I would suggest you take it to a tuner so they can tune it properly.

yea i know that bu, i live in hawaii theres only 1 dynoshop. its $$$$$ . is there a safe amount of boost i can use at all? i was under the impression 5-8 lbs isnt that much

8 lbs of boost will be different for different turbos as most know. But running with out a tune on any amount of boost can and more than likely will kill your engine...

longer answer, you could boost on stock ecu and injectors by using a FMU, inline fuel pump and missing link to control fuel. and retarding the timing through the distributor but that doesnt mean its the right way.
as others have mentioned it needs to be tuned. you will want a chipped ecu, larger fuel injectors & fuel pump and someone to tune the car and adjust fuel & timing through the computer program (hondata, ectune, etc.). unfortunately just 5psi still means the car can run lean and detonate.

A search will provide a lot of information for you at this point. Some things that will bring up a lot of useful info are - knock, fuel pump, injectors (DSM 450s seem to be quite popular) ectune, crome,... det cans ... The list goes on and on. This is a good starting point at any rate. I will tell you this. You do run a risk of damaging your engine if you continue to boost without knowing if you are adding any fuel or if the timing has be modified on your engine. Please be careful. Perhaps ask the person who you got the car from.

Well if you want to manually retard the timing then you just rotate the distributer towards the retard... IE You standing in front of the car.
Otherwise you should really set the timing to dead stock and have the timing adjusted according to RPM and boost load.
Stock ecu can not run 8lbs of boost safely... or any for that matter... there are all sorts of ghetto work arounds that will "work" but they're not reliable or safe really.
Spend $$$$ on your fuel system/ecu/tuning.

retarding the timing works for a very very short term fix.
IE limping it to the tuner.
do NOT hit boost without a tune.
unless you really like rebuilding engines.

I see you live on oahu. I have a AEM EMS 1020 full standalone ecu if you need something to tune your car. PM me if your interested.
Also you really shouldn't run your car with a stock ecu and not knowing what your timing or even fuel maps are.

Not to be a thread jacker.. but im kinda in the same situation but i got my p28 chipped with a base map for my fuel and turbo setup...will this be enough to drive to the tuner or would i have to also adjust my timing or should the tuner take care of all that...Im running a chipped p28 on my y8 with stock y8 gears so would i have to change my gears to a z6 gear or would the tuner make all the neccesary adjustments to make every thing work together???
