Default A question about Shaft movement in new turbo.

Would a new or rebuilt turbo's shaft move in and out or side to side (ever so slightly)? Is it normal for a new (or very good condition) turbo shaft to move slightly? Or should they not move at all? Thanks for you info!

My turbo has about 20k on it, and it has slight side to side movement, but no in and out movement at all.

a brand new turbo with no oil in it might have a shaft that moves SLIGHTLY side to side, but when oil fills it up, it helps seal it alittle more and it wont move as easily side to side.. if your turbo shaft moves in and out, thats bad, time for rebuild

If it didn't move at all then you have no clearance...Like J337 said, that movement is the clearance needed for the oil to flow thru...Before you speak of shaftplay problems, you should learn how to measure it using a dial indicator and the range of acceptable play that your turbo has been tested for...

Contact ITS, they will be happy to give you this very important information...They should also be able to explain to you how to setup your dial idicator to measure play...

FYI, you set the dial indicator so that its 100% Parallel with the shaft, push the shaft in, then push the dial indicator right up to it, now push the shaft out from the other end of the turbo...Make sure that everything is set in place so you won't get false measurements...This is one measurement...

Next, you place the dial indicator such that its 100% Perpendicular to the Shaft, Stick it in the CHRA and have it contact the bearing...Now, push the bearing up and observe the measurement...This is the final measurement...I recommend using a Cam Degree Kit to help you measure play...
