Proper way to install ARP head studs
Ive been told by 3 different people to install them 3 different ways. I know the torque specs to torque them to im just confused on how to put them in. First I was told to put them in hand tight then put the nut on and start to torque them. A second person told me to bottom the stud out and then back it off one half turn then to torque them on. Lastly I was told put the stud in and actually torque the stud to 10 ft. lbs and then put the head on. Can someone please tell me the correct wat to install the studs in my block? Thanks
i need to know this as well. i am to lazy to look at the directions right now. they over at the shop. ill post when i find out for sure.
i just installed mine yesterday. the paper work that comes with them clearly says make them hand tight. do not torque them, just make sure they are all the way threaded down.
I just wanted to clarify that you do put them in hand tight. The directions also say to torque them at 65 ft. lbs. but GE says go to 80 with them. Im gonna go to 80 even though the directions clearly say 65
I used blue lock tite in the block after cleaning the threads good, and hand tighten them to like about 10ft-lbs and then torqued the head to 78ft-lbs no problems so far at 10 psi
my instructions said to torque to 70# with the provided lube, and 85# if using 30wt motor oil. i am also using the inline pro 2 mm head gasket....and to use that you are supposed to touque 10% over stock which would be 66# i belive.
i torqued to 70, i hope all turns out

When I installed mine, I screwed them into the block using 10 ft-lb. Finger-tight resulted in all of the studs sitting at different heights. Additionally, I know some people have had problems with the studs backing out when screwed in only finger-tight.

The nuts will only fit on one end of the stud. It's the side that they don't fit on that goes into the block.

On my D16 ARP studs, the nut can go on either end. ARP (as well as a few others on this board) told me the long thread end goes in the block.
