Default Problems with egt gauge

last week i moved my gauge to a pod from my custom gauge holder that i was making, anywho, i hook it all up and turn it on to test it, and it was reading like an inch below the 0 so i turned the car off, checked everything made sure it was hooked up right and it was still messed up, so i cut the wires for the probe and reconnected them with diffrent connectors, i start it up and now its normal , shrug.

anyways over the last week it has been reading alot hotter than normal, in 5th gear cruising at 85 its at 1400 degrees, and this was on a hour long trip, so im pretty sure if it was 1400 degrees for 1 hour id have a melted piston.

Before last week in fith gear it would be about 1200 degrees when cruising,

when i floor it in say, 2nd gear at the top of 8k it will be close to 1400 and before it would barely goto 12

im thinking its just a problem with the crapometer gauge, but at the same time im wondering if i have a problem, im going to go check my plugs after it stops raining, to see if they look like im running lean. and i will update this thread, anybody have any ideas?

im kind of new to this, i was just told to let off once i got around 1400.

Anyways before it was running lower temps, and the only thing that has changed is im using a better ground and power location.

I dunno, my buddies stock D15b7 we hit 1450F NA doing like 100mph. Im pretty sure that we didnt melt a pistion... Safe* tempature is relative, I know guys that run 1550F (boosted) and there setup is pretty safe... Theres a nice long post about EGT temps and what they mean somewhere around here... As for the different temp reading, have you changed the location of the sensor? If so, thats why your temps are higher... the closer to the EXH. mani the better, or better yet, mounted on the EXH mani.... When you check your plugs, make a 2nd or 3rd gear run and then when you get to the top of the gear, shut the car off and pull over and yank the plugs then to get a true reading of what your motor is doing...

good luck

i guess i was previously misinformed about how a egt guage works etc.. the search was down when i made this post i have since gone back and looked at other threads and for the most part it sounds like my temps are normal, i didnt move the probe, just the gauge, and i used better wiring and stuff, before it was kind of rigged, so i guess im getting a more accurate signal than before.

The probe is in the 2nd cylinder on the turbo manifold, because i have a revhard mani, and the wastegate is on the third runner. I know 3 is suppose to be the hottest, but i doubt its much hotter than number 2,

Anyhow i didnt get a chance to check my plugs i will do it on lunch tommorow.

What is your complete setup? Who tuned it/ what fuel management are you using?

Oh boy, I have a feeling that you are going to get some crap for sportin' the FMU. Anyway, the polarity of the guage is correct? Is there a cut in the wire and is being grounded to the car?

no, nothings grounded out, i think its just getting a cleaner signal, everyone hates on the fmu and thats fine, its worked for me and im sure it will be fine until im ready to drop 1500 bucks on tuning.

Aren't EGT gauges also good for checking to see if your timing is off? maybe that's something you'll wanna look at too.

EDIT: I think the way it goes is if your timing is too retarded your EGT's will start to get really high.

When are you gonna upgrade your shizzle to uberdata and larger injectors?

there are so many factors, that ***** with the egt temps. i just thought my guage was broken.

i have a 3k honey moon to save for, so it will probably be after i get back from that honeymoon before i get any tuning done
