Default Which one do you prefer? B18A/B sleeve block or B20 sleeve block

As the title says. I was leaning towards B20 on my new block but some guy on ht told me he doesn't like the way b20 sleeve sits and recommand me to get b18a/b and bore it to 83mm (close to 2 liter). Now..I would like honest opinion from people with "experience" on this. I really don't like to hear crap from some smart *** who don't even have turbo on their car. Thanks in advance!

i had an LS, and i cracked the sleeve ont hat one. now i have a B20 on 14 psi and it kicks *** !!! hella torque and down low power ... i worry about it but so far its taking my abuse better than my LS motor did . if you ask boosted hybrid, tony1, stoopid they will all say b20, cuz i asked em n thats what they told me .. the B20 " weak" sleeves is over done and they say they arent too much weaker.

IMO if you're gonna sleeve it, it really doesn't matter. you can bore a 1.8 to a 2.0 if you're getting sleeves installed. so the choice is really up to you...although an LS is cheaper to get a hold of.

That is kind of my feelings too. Once sleeved properly, they seem pretty much to have the same strength.

no no no no no...i have a b18c1 ge sleeve right now. Don't like that motor too much and rather than ripping it apart...figure i'll just get a b20 block (i get 'em fairly cheap and easily) with darton sleeves. I personally like to use b20 sleeved block but I was told by someone that b18 sets better w/ the sleeves. I think I'm gonna go with B20 just because it was already 2 liter in begin with and with the darton sleeve I should be fine right? And with itr crank too.

Planning to push **** LOT MORE HP than the one i'm making now

So you are planning on giving up on a block with a factory girdle and strong crank for a block with regular mains and a weaker crank? Makes sense to me.
We better tell Kenny Tran that the 900 whp he makes with a b18c sleaved block is not enough

no no no...i have some weird problem w/ the block i have which I can't seem to figure it out (even ralphy @ drt can't figure that shti out) *I'll PM you w/ this problem and see if you can solve it*. As using another b18c1 block (which I have one laying around too). I can do that too but I'm just throwing ideas around and see what I can do

JustJeff (1:25 AM 10/1/2003): hey earl. I just replied back on the post that i made regarding using b18a/b or b20 buttom end
JustJeff (1:25 AM 10/1/2003): you see, the problem i have with my block is that for some reason..it *builds* pressure in the water jacket under boost.
JustJeff (1:26 AM 10/1/2003): like if i'm under boost. the radiator fluid will kick back to the canister (literally) and I can't seem to make much power with it too. I changed the headgasket, new arp studs, retorque and everything..i just can't seem to find the problem.
JustJeff (1:27 AM 10/1/2003): i dunno if you ever had that problem before but at this time..i'm very fraustrated w/ it and I just don't want the **** around with it no more since nobody can seem to figure it out (ralphy @ drt couldn't figure that **** out)
earl (1:43 AM 10/1/2003): Did you check to see if a sleeve has dropped? Pressure can only come from 3 spots. One is over the top of a dropped sleeve. The unlikely second is at the bottom where it seats into the block. I don't see how pressure can get in thru the bottom so the only other idea would be a minor crack somewhere in the cylinder head where combustion is being pushed into a water jacket.
A good radiator shop could pressurize your cooling system. As they do that, pull your sparkplugs and use a strong light and look for coolant to show up in one of the combustion chambers. This will give you a clue where to start looking.
Another thing you might try is a product called K&W Block Seal. Follow the directions EXACTLY. It could make the problem go away if you get lucky.
As to the power aspect, you probably need to retune with a proven tuner.
Let me know your results.

earl
--------------------------------------------------------------------

When we took out the head..the sleeves were fine. I mean the car runs normal besides that problem. Besides, if the sleeve drop, wouldn't the whole cylinder flood with radiator fluid? I'm convicing that theres a crack in the head somewhere Is there anyway I can check that w/o pulling the head out again?

as for tuning aspect, ralphy at DRT seems to tune my car fine but I've been learning on how to tune it myself (AEM EMS btw). I'm not worry about the tuning..just that my motor is keep ******* up!

This can be a tough problem to diagnose. It can be a minor crack that is only opening under temperature. It can be a sleeve distorting slightly with the motor warm. Let your imagination run wild.
Having said all this, I assume all normal things like an operation radiator fan, stuck thermostat etc. have been eliminated.

and this is the very same reason why i dont' even want to **** w/ it and get a new block to play with.

and yes, all the little stuff have been changed, checked (new thermostat, new alluminum radiator, slim fan..etc).

damn cars..never ending problems!

I hope your block will work for you. Remember, replacing it won't fix anything if the problem is in the head. First thing to do if the KW fails, is to pull the head, have it stripped down and have a complete crack check done by a GOOD machine shop. The problem could be in the head.
If all else fails, contact me before you start a new block. I want to talk to you about having Benson inspect your block, maybe he can fix it.
