OIL PUMP PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!
heres the situation....i have a fully built gsr motor with a T-70 turbo makin approximately 450@wheels 16 psi.....last summer i blew a stock oil pump gear into a million peices so i had the bottomend re-checked and it was fine(balanced).....so i replaced the gear with a prodrive and this past weekend the same thing happened..... anyone have any suggestions.....????????
the first time the stock pump blew i was using a civic type r pulley single belt......then i was told to put the stock 1 back on 3 belt.......and the machineshop checked the clearances on the gears said they were alright.......i drove the car about 2000 miles with the pro drive.....
The fact that a ProDrive billet gear can break, really confuses me. It just does not seem possible but I know it happens. Can you post pix of the gear?
When taking the motor apart, did you notice anything funny when pulling the flywheel off the crank? Were any bolts loose? Was the flywheel material under the bolts gauled? Any gauling between the flywheel and the crank? Any problem in this area will cause a shock to go thru the crank and possibly break the oil pump gears.

i wil post up some pics in a few hours......everything else is fine......luckily after the first time it happened i installed a pro light (oil pressure light)...... so i didnt wipe out the botom end..... i just have to take it a apart and clean.......but i dont wanna asssemble until i figure out this oil pump problem......or i buy a moroso extranl pump kit....to much $$$$$
HERES THE PICS...................
WHATS LEFT OF MY PRO DRIVE GEAR.........

THE HOUSING..........

GEAR AGAIN...........

MY TURBO AND MANIFOLD.............

I would really like to hear ProDrive's thoughts on this happening. Something has to be wrong because something is shocking the gears into submission...bent crank snout?...out of balance flywheel or clutch?...harmonic balancer rocking back and forth on the snout?...How does the key look that holds the balancer in place? Will ProDrive warranty this?
i taking the bottom end back to the machine shop to have rechecked for a third time...... but my machinist even told me that the bottomend was fine the first 2 times......so we'll see what happens....nothings was bent before and the the key is fine.......
Have the machinist put a dial indicator on the snout of the crank and spin the crank in the block. There should be no wobble. Something has got to show up..
i would take aart that motor completely and clean it on a solvent tank
u never know if some other pieces stay around and cause more damage on ur engine
i say check for clearances....... i might also wanna point out that u should check the pressure releif valve.... use some crocus paper on it to make sure is smooth
are u using a stronger spring on it???
my guess is that maybe the releif valve isnt letting some of the pressur eout and causes the pump to become a lil to pressurize and unstable on 7.5k rpms
what oil pressure u have when u up there???
if not.. then ike someone else said use the right pulley for the motor.. i have spun 3 motor bearings on the rods.. and wonder if having the wrong pulley caused it.. thats why my built motor now has the stock pulley that even tho is like 3 more pds.. i rather be on the safe side

my bottom end is bore to a 1.9 litre and 10:1 compression.......starts to spool at about 4000....... and at 16psi by 5500 rpm i cant fry the tires in 1st, 2nd, 3rd even in 4th cruisin at 120kms if i hit it.....it frys....but with a normal tire......on a drag radial i spin 1st, 2nd and a bit of 3rd.......
IM me if you find the cause. I would love to figure out how to stop these gears from breaking or at least what causes it. I still can't believe a billet gear can shatter like that.
Damn thats awful. I was either going to get a prodrive gear or ATI pulley. I'm glad I picked the ATI. I broke a stock pump last week and I found out today my crank was out of balance but it did last over 3000 miles.
just from looking at the pics it looks like material failure possibly due to a missed heat (normalizing) treatment after machining resulting in material brinelling (brittle/hardening). they should be produced through a sinter process for bulletproof(ness). Should an incorrect install/clearance been the cuase the gear should not have failed in fracture, there should be stretching before failure.
