Default Oil pressure problem

Having Problems!! Everytime I start out in any gear and take it to about 4k rpm, my oil pressure gauge shoots up to 90 psi then bounces back down to 40 psi with a puff of smoke shooting out of the exhaust. I assume the smoke is coming from the surge of oil pressure but I don't understand why I getting the surge to begin with. I would greatly appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

Its the oil relief piston in the oil pump. Its getting stuck in the bore. Take the spring and piston out and inspect the piston for wear. Wetsand the wear spots with 400grit w/d to reduce the sticking.
