Oil Breather system
Hi all,
Does anybody have any links or advice on how to create a good breather system on a GSR block? i.e. where to vent (crankcase/head takeoffs) etc? I expect my engine to be producing a good amount of power so would like to have an adequate breather system (with return to sump) in place.
Can anyone help?

Re: Oil Breather system
i used to run a z10 kit to the back of the block but it did not work for me can kept filling up after a full boost passes down the track so i now tapped on to valvecover with 2 12 bongs run to a can with no drain back and so far so good, hope that helps

2 fittings off the front of th evalve cover for up to 500whp preferably -12an but -10an will work. 500-700 two off valve cover and two off back of block. 700 and up four off valve cover and two off back of block.
no drain back on any of those setups

Why no drain back? thats a bit confusing as i would have always thought that was a good idea?
Do you just drill and tap thes fittings? simple as that? (obviously with appropriate sealer!)

drain back is not a good idea, alot of moisture goes into the catch can and mixes with the oil. do yuou really want milky oil going back into your motor and contaminating the rest of the oil? and from my experience you shouldnt get much oil in the can to begin with. i get maybe 1/4 cup of oil in about 6 months with two fittings off the front of the valve cover

Re: Oil Breather system
its really ore placement of the lines than anything that causes oil to go into the can. the lines off the back of the block are the worst for that. the lines off the vc front dont hardley put any oil in the can and my can was at the height of the block so technically it wcould have been syphoning

Do you have any pics of your set up?
Also, i see that 2 vents of the crankcase is mentionned at the back. Is it not possible even with the turbo in place to vent one from the front?

Re: Oil Breather system
Hi
It's Eddie off CL forum; I used to use 2 off the back of the block and 2 off the front of the valve cover.
The 2 lines off the back of block would pass oil, under hard acceleration and above 15psi boost, the oil in the engine naturally flows back and as the pressure rises to vent it carries the oil as there is no baffling off these take offs, unless you drain back, the larger the line the better.
I now run just 2 off the front valve cover and they work really well, I have the OE one running into my can and 1 line out to the exhaust to vent.
Even if your engine is new built it’s going to breath, don’t think it won’t, believe me last thing you want is the dip stick popping at 200mph or the cam seals.
Here's an old picture, very dirty back then.

Re: Oil Breather system
My catch can vents via the exhaust system, the can its self is just a aluminium water bottle, the line to the exhaust vent is at the top so no baffle is required in the can (for me anyway).
I check the can every now and then, most of the time there is a small amount of mixture in the very bottom, no more than 1/4 inch at worst. Most of the mixture is condensation, as it's constantly venting though the exhaust.
Basically, it’s a 1/4 inch pipe inserted vertically into the down pipe (post) 02, the end inserted has a 45° slash cut facing away from the gas flow, as the exhaust passes it will draw from the catch can (Venturi effect).
Have a search on here for the exhaust evacuation breather method, there was a very long thread with good explanations and pictures.
Another picture of my exhaust set up, you can see the venturi pipe just before the flex joint. And for the record, I don’t use the 02 bung just after the turbo use one further down line.
