Vtec itself is good for boost since it changes the cam lobe to a better profile in the higher revs.

The reason people say VTEC is bad is because most Vtec are higher compression motors then non Vtec engines (10:1 for the GSR and 9.1:1 for the LS) higher compression is a little harder to tune and doesn't give much room for error as far as tuning goes, but it can easily be done and makes great power.

LS motors make more torque because of 2 things:
1.) the stroke is longer which = more torque
2.) The head itsn't as efficient so more boost is required for the same HP as a GSR leading to more torque and the same HP

Hope that clears everything up and all the rumors associated </TD></TR></TABLE>

very good explanation, couldnt have said it better myself

haha well I would have like to of given you an ls-t pull and then fully build it up again and show you lsvtec-t....buuuuuut do to limit funds and patience for that I just disabled vtec to show an LS-VTEC pull and then enabled it to show an LS-VTEC with it vtec enabled. The head is a GSR head just for reference. So in all, at least for me vtec is good for about 109whp.....I'll take two orders of vtec please.

yeah, cause if you did, you would dyno even lower than a non-vtec head. Because the cam profile is so much less agressive than an all-around cam profile of the non-vtec head, you would see alot lower numbers with a cam profile thats optimized for 1-5k (low cam profile, VTEC) as opposed to a non-vtec cam profile which is probably optimized for 2500-6500rpm (non-vtec).

Sorry if that didnt make sense, I just couldnt think of an easier way to say it.

Oh and I just remembered, the difference in torque and power between the two lines starting at 5000rpm is due to the fact that I let the motor sit for a bit and cool down. Ignition was kept constant and A/F's on both runs were 11.8. So basically this is probably the longest explaination, but Justin_Bradley: vtec definitely helps

Well the dyno really doesn't tell us much then because the VTEC cam that was in there was not designed to be used without VTEC. If you had a non-VTEC head and cam on there you would have seen better results since the cam is optimized to run without VTEC.

ssshhhhhhhhh It's as close as I can show...I don't think it would be financial worth it to go buy a head & cams for one thread on H-T haha

i like vtec+boost=lots of whp...i wouldn't give up my vtec despite anything great technology with the combination of force induction...higher lift longer redline so boost can takes it place and build power....

Another reason a non-vtec engine produces more torque is that it does not (in general) rev as high. So @ the same power output the non-vtec engine would be not be revvin as high and therefore have a torque that more closely matches the hp total.

HP=RPM x Torque/5252 or

Torque = (HP/RPM)5252

in general.....
