Default Need help with turbo setup!!!!

Hey H-T members I need your advice because I know nothing of it....ok I have a 97'gsr and I want to run boost between 300-350hp DD but here's my question what pistons should I run I was thinking that I rebuild the motor with stock compression pistons but they dont have forged ones in 10.1 so what should I do? And also which turbo setup is good? Also I wonder if I can run the turbo setup with no tune? Because I live in a town with pop.150,000 and there is no tune shops around the closest is 6hrs away.....thanks guys your help is greatly appreciated....

You can do that on a stock motor. They make 9.9:1 forged pistons if your set on forged. NO you can't run the turbo without a tune. Read through the FAQs

NO. If you don't have a tuner available, then you must learn how to tune. If you boost a motor without a tune (especially to 300-350whp), it will destroy it.

So what turbo setup should I get if I'm going to get it tuned? Which pistons should I go with? Because I wanted stock compression so I can still drive it without turbo first but don't wanna lose power.

I have cp 10:1 compression and I believe a Gsr stock compression is a little higher then 10:1

I pieced my turbo setup together piece by piece so i could tell u what brands are ideal. I also went from having zero tuning experience, bought Neptune and socketed my ecu, and tuned it myself. Neptune is just as good or better than Hondata i couldn't be happier with it. The parts list is quite extensive for the full turbo setup tho...took me awhile to piece it all together. But u must be careful, the higher compression run with the turbo the easier it is to detnate, therefore i don't know if i would attempt 10.1 without a professionals help, with those compression ratios you could achieve well over 600 hp with the right setup and TUNE. Otherwise you will blow your engine potentially your first pass.

The last time a factory turbo car was produced with under 8:1 compression was probably the 1980's. Most modern engines are 9:1 or above. The only real exception I can think of right now is the new STI's which are still 8.2:1, but the modern trend is definitely higher.

He could blow his engine first pass if it's 9:1 or 10:1, it doesn't really matter. I wouldn't advocate anyone without a huge knowledge of engines to attempt tuning their own engine the first go around anyways.

Ok I shouldn't have said a lot of cars are under 8, but 91, 92 mitsubishi galants are under 8 and mitsubishi in general run very low.

Setup: off the top of my head this is what I have...
Precision 6262s turbo charger
Precision 600HP intercooler
Tial 44mm MV-R WG
Tial Type Q bov
Ramhorn turbo manifold
Aluminum 2.5" intercooler piping
Walbrow 255lph fuel pump
RC 550 injectors (had to add resistor box)
MTX-L Wideband (necessary for tuning)
Mishimoto dual core aluminum half radiator w/slimfan
NGK iridium spark plugs and wires
P28 ECU with Neptune Demon board
OB2a to OBD1 conversion harness
then all your couplers and t-bolt clamps
ACT stage 2 clutch with competition clutch 8.8lb flywheel
3" exhaust with high flow resonator (no cat)

i think that covers about everything... keep in mind this is on a stock b18b1 engine, this turbo setup was put together for my built engine still in the garage that isnt quite finished yet. Before i put the flywheel in, on the original tune I hit 240 HP @ 10.7 psi at the wheels, (they did not have a fan going and looking at the recording my intake temps were over 100 deg. aka heat soaked to all hell) which is extremely under tuned. My afr's were still in the high 10's (way too rich) and my timing was still very retarded (not advanced) or conservative. Since then I have leaned it up some, but on the flywheel and about to mess with the timing this weekend actually. If your afr's are right, your huge power gains are in the timing. My redline is also only at 7k rpm, so when I go vtec in the built engine the turbo will really work to its potential aka a lot more power with the right tune. I can safely say im over 250HP now and if I don't blow my engine up messing with the timing then maybe i'll get it dyno'd again lol

Lol a k swap would be cool. If you are not looking for huge hp gains, or not much more than 350 ish then i would go with a little smaller turbo. And btw that 240hp was at 6500 rpm the dude didnt even take it to 7k. I bought everything brand new, which means all said and done i spent around 5 grand..

What turbo do you suggest for 350hp?

Maybe a precision 4854B or a 4831B turbo. Those arent your only two options but smaller turbos like are rated for your power goals. I would definently go with precision though read up on them

I think they're overpriced, and they have very little room to expand. I don't know if anyone has even made 350whp on one. Great if you need a CARB EO number, not great for much else. Check out the Go Autoworks Street Kit X. They seem to be a good company and that's a good price for a kit complete with a cast manifold and a good turbo.
