Default My DIY d16z6 Turbo Project ( Opinions welcomed all day long. )

Okaaaay... so I started this about a week ago, or two weeks today. I've collected some parts and got some great deals on used stuff. The motor has about 100,000 on it, came out of a 1995 Civic Ex Coupe and thanks to water getting into my 1992 Ex-V Sedan, I had to drop it about three or four months ago. Here's my list of parts with prices for those who want to know how much it's going to set ya back.

Stock internals and all. Ghettofied ya dig?

td05H 14b Turbo - 150 with no shaft play
HF manifold - 50
1g dsm SMIC - 50
1g DSM BOV - 50
Misc Pipes/Flanges from the DSM - 50 ( came with the Ebay auction )
Apexi VAFC in Box, all wiring and shiet. -- 100 bucks local
450cc Dsm Injectors -- 40 bucks
CRX resistor Box -- 25 on Ebay with wires.
-----
Total So far = Roughly about 575 in the hole.

Next Step--

Flamenco T's Oil Line kit -- 55 shipped for t3/14b setups.
Charge pipping ( 2.25 ) Mandrel bent -- 75 from local Grand Muffler, free Silicone Hoses and Clamps from friends at Ace Hardware.
Downpipe w/Flexpipe-- 100 bucks at the muffler shop.
Flanges/Adapterplates-- 100 if I can't find any cheaper.
Boost Gauge ( Autometer Phantom Series -- 20 bucks local pick up.
Manual Boost Controller DIY pages -- 5 dollars y0.
---
Total= 350 or so depending on what I can get away with.

That's around 925 for a whole setup.

Advice= Unless you can find all these parts even cheaper... Save up another 200 and get a prebuilt kit for your SOHC. This is just to see how much I can get away with.

I'll be running the tried and jumpy VAFC Hack, boosting between a daily 6-8psi and track 10. Dyno runs and tuning are coming a little ways after ( Those things are expensive. )

Compression Test results --
1st: 180
2nd: 180
3rd: 180
4th: 180

Sounds good to me. From what I gathered, above 170 is supposed to be okay to turbo charge. Weee.

Manual retarded timing about 4 degrees with the pretty ugly light gun.
93 Georgia Boy Octane all day long ( no more cruising the streets. ).
And Mobil1 Synthetic oil every 4k miles, along with the filters.

I'll be posting here often, then i'm making a site once it's all done just for people like me when it's hard to find info on Do it yourself turbos.

All comments welcome. And if you have something for me to buy... POST UP y0!

nice, nice. I don't have any problem with discount turbo set-ups You're actually getting some of the parts I plan to use in my set-up. I should be boosted in the next month or so. Right now I'm just trying to decide on which turbo to go for. I might just spring for a straight T3, but the price of a smaller t is attractive and I'm gonna convert to external wastegate anyways. the only thing I might recommend is using RC injectors instead of DSMs. They're fine, but RCs won't give you those here and there problemos. Just make sure to get them cleaned before usin' 'em. Lastly, I suggest investing in an EGT probe and gauge. Sensor can easily be put onto the HF mani you're using.

p.s. - where did you get most of these parts? I'm searching myself right now and would love to get a few more sources to compare prices.

Hey Soflsol, How much you want for it shipped? Email met at BLEUCIVIC@aol.com.

Alright on to the other stuff..

You can get a pre-assembled USED SOHC turbo kit for around that price. I've seen a few here on Honda-Tech posted up.

As far as where I've been shopping around--

Locals man Locals. Find a website that deals in your area of interests ( Imports ) and search the boards for sales. People always are trying to get rid of stuff. Honda-Tech Forced Induction Classifieds are there. Homemadeturbo.com. These are two GREAT places to get used yet quality stuff man. Just post up a WTB. I found my VAFC locally for that terribly good price.

The injectors look pretty clean, I think they'll do since I got them for 40. And the guy takes good care of his car so that's a plus. The O2 sensor thing is going to be something i'm looking into though. Thanks for the tip.

yeah I've been working with bigger kits for several years now, and have never really looked into the junkyard set-ups, but now I've found out d series Civics can't keep a/c with the STD mani.s because of how the turbos sit w/ the adapter plate. so looks as if I'll stick to my original plan of using a straight T3 or GReddy mani. w/ 18G for my d16y7.
