mobil 1....now syn blend?
Sup guys.
doing a new set up this year with the uberdata and such.
basically ive been running Mobil 1 10w30 for the past three years. im thinking the synthetic mobil1 is too thin for the motor. im getting a tad bit of blow by and well it needs to be fixed im wondering if simply going to a thicker oil would help the problem or fix it all together.
my question is, can i go back to a synthetic blend after being Mobil 1? im getting mixed anwsers from my searches etc. also, what weight oil is desired for a turbo honda?

no u should change to from 5w-30 to 10w-30 after turbo'ing anyway is what a lot of people say, i still run 5w-30 synthetic and its fine, but if u change to synthetic u need to stick with it you cant go back to normal.

Actually it's pretty normal to have alot more blow-by on a high power turbo engine.

Go for some 15w50 Mobil 1 (its the red cap, or at least it used to be). You guys can say its too thick and whatnot, but honestly I think the difference in weight is neglible and barely noticable, IMO. Plus thats what all the crotch rocket guys reccomend. So I recommend it too. After all, if their motor's can wrap 2-3x higher than mine on the stuff, it should be more than safe for me to run in my car.

to say blowby is normal could mean lots of things. its ok to have some but the more there is the more likley it is that your rings are going or you valves need to be cleaned cuz there overlapping etc. blowby is a normal wear and tear thing, not something that should be looked at lightly if its quite apparent

Actually its fine to switch back and forth, and even mix synthetic with regular oil. As long as it has the API symbol on it its fine.

yes you can go back to regular oil. thats why they make the blends. it's all oil, it's compatible. if your getting to much blow by get a catch can and run a less expensive oil like a gtx or something 10-30 or 15-40.

well ok i guess i should clarify.
i make pretty good power....more than stock so yea. it is a turbo!
blow by, im not saying im losing power, compression is good across the board, its a b16. however some blow by with a turbo honda is to be expeted. the amount is minimal but im getting it out my (ducks) valve cover breather filter. (researching my catch can as we speak) so yea.......anywyas im aware of my issues, just looking for oil guidance.

I get blow-by out my valve cover breather under boost as well. Saw it on the dyno. Nothing to worry about, it's normal.

You should be totally fine. Most of the information on oil that you will find is pretty inconclusive between syn and non-syn. I havent seen any solid evidence that would prove that switching from syn to non syn is bad.
With mobils new lineup
15000mi.-pure syn- $5.5X+ per quart
10000mi.-blend- $4.? per quart (just guessing on that one)
5000mi.-non syn- <$2 per quart
I would rather use non synthetic and switch the oil twice as much. Instead of running 15k-mi and doing an oil change every 3-5k, I change my oil every 2k and it costs the same. Plus I ussually get free oil filters anyways.

its all good if you're fine with weight selection and have not problems with oil breaking down due to heat. you won't find 5w40 or 15w50 type weights in conventional oil. 5w40 is what i chose during winter for startup and high temp protection, 15w50 is what i'm going to run this summer, and synth. is more stable than conventional, theres no way around it. i would stick wiht conventional if they offered the weights i'm looking for.

must be something else, old skool JDM rubber piston rings are resistant due to oversized piston retainers!

yeah, switching from synthetic to non synthetic or mineral oil is fine. thats why they have a synthetic blend. and to answer your question, i think you will be fine with the synthetic blend if that is waht you want. personally i would opt for a thicker synthetic oil rather than using a synthetic blend with the turbo
