Well to start off, I've been at a loss to figure out why the hell my car has been consuming so much oil. The motor was built not too long ago and never had any previous problems (I bought the car from a friend of mine). Didn't burn oil when I got it either. However, ever since I did the first oil change on it (since owning it) and switched to 10w30 mobil 1 synthetic it seems it's been consuming a lot of oil. Motor seems fine though, no issues otherwise. I was reading some old posts and i've seen a lot of people run thicker oil or stick to dino oil not because the motor is damaged, but i guess the clearances are looser on some motors and they just tend to "like" thicker oil. i noticed itr206 was running 20w50 on his with no problem after having the same problems as me (except he was on 10w30 non synth). just curious what people think, or KNOW i should say about running thicker (10w40, 20w50 i had in mind) oils. I bought some 10w30 non synth mobil 1 but a friend of mine told me i should just try 20w50 as that's what he runs in his car. Any insight?

You could probably get away with 20W50 in the summer, but it will not be appropriate in the winter, especially on an over head cam motor. In the cold, the cams will starve for oil on startup with molasses like 20w50. I'd go with the thinnest oil possible that will still address your consumption problem...take baby steps.

yeah that makes sense. i bought some reglar mobil 1 10w30 dino oil. gonna try that first (since it didn't burn dino before). if it still burns i'll try 10w40, then 20w50 if anything.

20w-50 is stock recommended volkswagon oil weight. its like mud heh.

my ls used to burn a solid amount of oil before the turbo when i was running 5w-30. i now run 10w-40 of about 3.5qts per oil change, and about .5 qt of lucas oil stabilizer. ive heard mixed things about running it on turbo setups, but i have not noticed any effects, other than my car doesnt burn half as much oil

Mobil synthetic gets the BIG from me and most I know. Run 10-30 from anyone else.

why don't you like it? Its worked good so far for me except the fact that it leaks out of everywhere it can find to seep through

why don't you like it? Its worked good so far for me except the fact that it leaks out of everywhere it can find to seep through </TD></TR></TABLE> You got it. Its a little to thin, like water is the term I hear...

I will say i'm running Mobil1 10w30 and my car is eating it up. Although my oil temps got up to over 250 degrees the other day, so I'm sure that that caused some of my oil eating issue.

But i'm either going to move to 20w50 or back to regular oil. my compression is great and my leakdown is good, I think its just how thin the oil gets.

if your not burning oil i wouldn't worry bout it. like i said itr206's motor was the same as mine. just burned thinner oil too easily. could be the clearances in the motor.

yeah i ran 10w30 synthetic fine in my previous motors.

well i noticed just recently that i had lost a good bit of oil fairly quick, but my car never smokes and it has no visible blowby at all from the valvecover breather so i knew it couldn't have burned as much oil as it did in such a short amount of time. I think it was just a combination of my leaking return line and a possible leaking crank seal.

I run mobil 20w50 in my car but I may switch to a different brand. Besides being thin to start with even the 20w50 really turns to water very fast if it starts to get hot. Its fine most of the time but after some hard runs in the hot summer weather I can tell when the oil gets hot because the pressure has a noticable drop, I have seen others post they are experiencing the same as well but did not have this problem after switching to castrol 20w50 or similar. And yes the damn mobil will find its way out of just about every single gasket in the motor but it did not leak a drop when I broke it in on dino 10w30, all my normal parking places probably have a good 50 dollars each in oil sitting on them .
