Default This may be a stupid question but...............

I was thinking, can you, or better yet would it be smart to put a cold air on a turbo. Here me out before you start flaming. If the engine gets its air from the turbo inlet, and cold air=more power, then wouldnt it make sense that if you could get colder air into the turbo, then it would make more power??? Let the flaming begin???

the turbo will pull in a lot of air, a longer pipe in front of it is going to make the turbo work harder to pull in air, and that will heat the intake charge and probably offset any gains by pulling in cooler air.

Well, yes its a stupid question... but it only shows that you dont understand how a turbo works...

1. The air from the manifold spins the turbo and is let out the exhaust... (meanwhile the exhause air heats the spinning turbo)

2. The spinning turbo pulles air in the filter and forces it into the intake manifold. (meanwhile, the hot turbo heats ALL the air moving through the intake)

Putting a cold air intake would make no difference if any since the turbo is SO hot.

----But----

There is hope:

Racing geniuses like these here on honda tech, found out that you can put a thing called an intercooler in front of your car, then re-pipe your turbo.

Now, instead of the turbo forcing hot air into the intake manifold, it forces it through the intercooler (which is like a radiator for turbo air), and then the cooled air goes back into the intake manifold.

There you go, just like you said... colder air into the intake manifold

I have an idea then, how bout you start thinking before you ask stupid questions... then when someone tries to help you with your questions, how bout you stop being a jackass, and just thank god that someone wasted his time trying to help you.

I assumed you didnt know jack **** because u asked a question like that. I tried to help you, but apparently you are just an idiot.

dude, chill out..we don't need snotty *** attitudes like that on this board...take that **** to superhonda or sumthin..

the question he asked is a valid one....he isn't stupid for asking it...everyone has questions from time to time..you can't gauge the intelligence of a person by a simple question...

Actually the incoming air isnt getting heated simply because the turbo is hot. Air temperature rises when it is compressed, this is the main contributing factor.

lol that was funny he got yah good.. but you know iv heard of people buting some sort of cold air intake or air ram...but usually for those who dont run an IC. usually the guys running smaller turbos. They are usually this big chamer so when the turbo sucks, there is air on demand without causing the turbo to suck so hard.

i've seen this done on many turbo cars...not sure how well it works though. My brother has a wrx and injen makes a cai for his turboed car...a few other wrx's in this area have it and they say they love it. After some research we just decided to go with a short air intake, probally blitz, since it seems like it makes not much of a difference and we don't want to risk hydrolocking the engine.

B-Series Sol,
Please dont come into FI ever again making a reply they way you did. 1) Its not a stupid question 2) You deserved what you got by 311 pointing out your Vtec valve cover question and 3) We are here to learn and ask questions.

Please come again, but without your smartass replies.

anyway, to answer your question, if the air is cooler to start with, it will be cooler upon exit. I know many racer remove their headlights to get cold air, and it's usually worth a tenth or two.

I don't see this as a stupid question. Some race cars are now sticking the air horn of their turbo out side the car in order to pick up cooler air. I assume this would make the intercooler a little more efficient. Could apply to a street set-up also.
There is the chicken soup theory that says it might not help but it couldn't hurt. Then there is also the chicken little theory...

I use the dead man theory.

You can give a dead man an enema. It may not help him, but it sure ain't gonna hurt him

hahahahaha, now THAT is a stupid question, advertise dohc vtec on a stock-ish b18b.

only stupid question on this board is not asking at all - to say the truth.

yes asking

"what is VTEC" or

"will a gsr valve cover fit on an LS head" -- oops, i guess that was already asked

the original question wasn't dumb, but there ARE also ICE coolers that go inplace of the battery area.

so, you'd be running a front mount intercooler (FMIC), and also have it iced off as it goes into the intake manifold with an ice cooling pack that cools off the intake even more.

just more info for ur question bro

as for the dude who flamed him, and asked dumber questions, don't flame -- it will come back and haunt you unless you KNOW where you stand. so don't bother

Ok guys listen to this, the reason I asked if a GSR valve cover would fit on an LS is because the DOHC VTEC could be shaved off and it would make the already ugly LS motor a little nicer to look at. Not a bad question.

However a bad question is "lets put a cold air intake on a turbo." I tried to answer it as if he just didnt know what he was talking about.

Oh yeah, look at the dates on my older questions too... they were from a while ago, before I knew what I was talking about. I was just trying to do what everyone else does, ask quesions... help when possible.

311 asked a question, and I tried to help him as thuroughly as possible and he went off being scarastic and rude, so dont tell me to chill out. Talk to him about being a little more considerate.

Hey, maybe I wasnt entirely right, but Im not that far off... and obviously I have a little more insight than him because I wasnt the one asking the question.

no,you were being a smart ***,he had a good question, why not use cold air with a turbo, makes pleanty sense to me,the colder it starts out the colder it will remain, only an IDIOT(you) would not understand that, and only and IDIOT(you again) would try to stick a non vtec valve cover on a ls,do you even know what they look like, have you ever compered the two in photos, lol, sorry to flame you,but dont answer peoples questions unless you know the answers and have something to give that is useful, thanx for your attention and understanding that yes,i am a *******.lol.
