Default knock on startup

Not piston slap, motor has been built like this for 25k miles and never had a single noise. This morning when I started it, for maybe a second or a second and a half, it has a knock that sounds like a rod is about to come straight off the crank and then it's gone. I shut it off and tried again and it was there again.

All the way to work I drove through all rpm ranges with the windows down and listening to it and the only other time it will do it is between 3200 and 3500 on the stock tach and not nearly as loud but still there. No noise at idle and no difference in driving it.

When I got to work had a buddy start it a couple of times with me under the hood and under the car and the noise is coming from the #1 cyl area but not near the oil pan. Almost sounds like the head area but a bit lower.

I am wondering if I could have had a bearing in my water pump take a dump or something like that because I am kinda at a loss for idea.

Motor is a stock bore B16 with JE 9:1, eagle rods, OEM bearing and ARP hardware.

That was coming anyway, the whole car is getting torn down Friday for a new set of headstuds, HG, mani, turbo, wastegate, tbelt, waterpump, injectors, and so much more lol.

I was basically rebuilding everything to be much larger and much better and then this happened and the short block was the ONLY thing I wasn't touching lol. So much for that.

Well anyway after lunch, me and a buddy went out and tried this for a while and it's coming from the head just above the #1 cyl, possibly LMA, who knows. I just have to limp it home nice and easy and start the tear down early.

for a quick simple check of the LMA's pull the valve cover off and press down on all the LMA's. if any of them stick down that could cause some knocking/tapping/ticking noises.

just make sure the vtec lobe is off the LMA before trying to press down on them.

I really hope your wrong lol. I just don't feel like spending the money.

If it's a rod, I am ditching the B16 and getting a new set of rods and bearings and throwing together a B18 bottom end and that's a grand I don't want to drop.

I will know tonight or tomorrow though, I just keep putting it off because I fear the worst lol.

Good god you were wrong and I can't help but be thrilled about it

I pulled it all the way down to a shortblock tonight to get everything ready for the new parts that are in the garage and guess what I found? The idler puller for the AC that came out MONTHS ago was left in (used to CX hatches that are missing all that **** from the factory) and my idler had worked itself loose and was bouncing off the crank pulley. Good god I am about as happy as you can be without having a threesome with Kiera knightley and Kate Beckensdale lmao.

I love this ****.
